PITTSFIELD – A civil rights specialist in the Attorney General’s Office said Friday that the investigation into an alleged racial incident involving Maine Central Institute students is still under way. So far, said Tom Harnett, no one has been cited for any violations.
Harnett visited the MCI campus Thursday and interviewed a group of boarding students who said racial slurs had been yelled at them last Monday when they were walking back to the school campus from a local store. The students, who are black, told officials that a group of local teenagers and men had taunted them. One student allegedly threw a punch that struck one of the local people, police confirmed.
No one wanted to press charges in the assault, said Police Chief Steven Emery, but the issue of possible civil rights violations was turned over to the Attorney General’s Office.
Emery said that only two or three people are responsible for the illegal activity but that they are generating a large following.
Harnett said the investigation into the incident will continue next week.
