Owners Carl and Irene Brown are again hosts for the Arthur Jewell Community Health Center Benefit Tournament, with two flights teeing off at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Country View Golf Club in Brooks.

Irene Brown reminds all golfers in the four-person scramble that your “collective handicap must exceed 50!”

The individual entry fee is $40 or $160 per team. Hole and team sponsorships are available for $270 or hole sponsorships for $150.

Merchandise prizes with a total value of $1,500 will be given the top five teams, and awards presented for the longest and straightest drive and closest to the pins.

The first golfer to get a hole in one on the infamous ninth hole will win a new car, compliments of Kallis Ford.

Past tournaments have raised $10,000 and all proceeds benefit the health center and local ambulance service.

The response from participants “has been good, and now we need to spread the word,” about the Art Harvest Silent Auction and Art Show from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Houlton Higher Education Center, 18 Military St., reports Glynn Porter.

Admission to this first fund-raiser sponsored by the Health Services Foundation is $5 for children age 12 and over and free for younger children accompanied by an adult. Music and refreshments will be provided.

The Kids Mile Scramble begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, in the sponsoring Applebee’s parking lot in Bangor, and the 5K Road Race at 9:30 a.m. at that site.

Preregistration for adults is $15 or $20 on race day. Registration for children is $6.

Cash prizes will be awarded the top three male and female finishers, with polished granite plaques going to winners of different age groups and categories.

All proceeds help the Bangor Fire Department purchase a thermal imaging camera.

Washington County Technical College Foundation will hold the first what it hopes will be an annual golf tournament Saturday, Sept. 28, at St. Croix Country Club in Calais.

Tournament organizer Tina Erskine appreciates the help of tournament adviser Rand Castile and the country club board members, who agreed to host the event to benefit students in need.

The three-person, best ball scramble begins with registration at 8 a.m. and a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

The entry fee is $25, and prizes will be awarded. A reception follows and, for visiting golfers, the Calais Motor Inn is offering a two-person room rate of $59, including breakfast.

Hospice of Eastern Maine Pathfinders: Support for Grieving Children, has assisted hundreds of children and family members since its inception in 1994.

Pathfinders offers a 10-week grief support group for children and families or caregivers experiencing the death of a loved one. Pathfinders’ fall 2002 session is 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 1-Dec. 10, at Bangor Christian School.

The Old Time Follies is 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Old Town Museum, 138 South Main St.

WLBZ-TV meteorologist Steve McKay will emcee the show, which features musical talent, dancers, skits and a chorus of more than 25 singers.

Refreshments will be available, and suggested donations are $5 for adults and $1.50 for children.

Proceeds benefit the museum, and tickets are available there 1-5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, or from any museum member.

A photo of 5-year-old Kyle Patrock of Milford will appear in lights on Broadway in New York City’s Times Square Sunday, Sept. 29, as part of a National Down Syndrome Society awareness campaign, according to a society release. Panasonic will display approximately 200 photographs for 40 minutes on the Times Square Astrovision in recognition of October as National Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

Senior Spectrum, the Central Maine Area Agency on Aging, offers a two-part Medicare volunteer training program from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, and Tuesday, Oct. 15, at its Waldo Community Center, 18 Merriam Road, Belfast. A light lunch will be provided.

Trained Medicare volunteers will help seniors identify and reduce errors, waste and fraud in the Medicare and Medicaid health care systems, reports director of communications Laura Santini-Smith.
