FALMOUTH – Harvard University scored three goals in a span of 11:27 late in the second half to erase a 2-0 deficit and nip the University of Maine men’s soccer team 3-2 Tuesday night. Harvard is now 4-1 while Maine fell to 1-4-2.

FALMOUTH – Harvard University scored three goals in a span of 11:27 late in the second half to erase a 2-0 deficit and nip the University of Maine men’s soccer team 3-2 Tuesday night.

Harvard is now 4-1 while Maine fell to 1-4-2.

Kevin Ara’s direct free kick won it with just 5:13 remaining.

Ara’s penalty kick had cut Maine’s lead in half with 16:40 left and Ladd Fritz tied the game 9:30 later.

Matt Young and Ellsworth’s Cooper Friend had staked Maine to its 2-0 lead as they each found the back of the Crimson net from 25 yards out. Daniel Florez assisted on the Young goal.

Ryan Johnson made one save on 12 shots in the first half for Harvard before Jamie Roth came on to play in the second half and wasn’t forced to make a save.

Josh Sjostrom finished with six saves for Maine.

Harvard outshot Maine 20-18 including a 16-6 margin in the second half.

Bates 2, UM-Farmington 0

At Lewiston, Nick MacInnis slotted home a breakaway three minutes into the game and Chris Mansfield and James Kenly combined for four saves as Bates won its second game against three losses.

Alex Wolff added an insurance goal in the second half off a pass from Bangor’s Eben Sypitkowski.

Ryan Hersey and Seabren Reeves teams up for nine saves for the 3-2 Beavers.

Field hockey

USM 5, Salem State 0

At Salem, Mass., Kayla Vaughan scored two goals to help lead 5-2 Southern Maine past 0-5 Salem State.

Libby Asselin, Darci Holland and Sarah Dolley scored the other USM goals while Renee Heath, Deedra Beveridge and Sarah Metivier notched assists.

Jessie Superchi and Nicole Sergent combined to make four saves on six shots.

Salem State goalies Meaghan Oskirko and Janine Venezia combined to stop 17 of 32 shots.

Colby 1, UM-Farmington 0 (OT)

At Farmington, senior captain Lyndsay Peters scored off her own rebound 10:10 into overtime as the White Mules improved to 5-0.

Senior goalie Carrie Morin of Augusta, who is playing college field hockey for the first time this season, made six saves to extend her scoreless streak to 248 minutes.

Fawn Albert stopped nine shots for 3-2 UM-Farmington.

Thomas 3, St. Joseph’s 2 (OT)

At Gorham, Erin Lovejoy’s second goal of the game tied it with just 1:20 left in regulation and Molly Tibbetts scored one minute into overtime as Thomas rallied for its second win against three losses.

Amber Billings had an assist on Lovejoy’s game-opening goal and Jen Lang finished with 10 saves.

Davan Clawson scored both goals for 3-4 St. Joseph’s with Amber Billings and Amanda Thompson picking up assists. Mary Tibbetts made 10 saves for the Monks.
