BREWER – If anything good can come out of “mayhem” it happened for the Bangor girls soccer team Tuesday night at Doyle Field.
Just ask Bangor soccer player Amanda Mooers. The sophomore gave Bangor a 2-1 win over Brewer when she scored a goal with just 5:38 remaining in the match.
“The goalie came out and the ball ricocheted off the goalie and then off a defender. Basically it was just like mayhem. And I just shot it and luckily it went in,” Mooers said.
But there was a little more to it than that. Bangor’s Justine Smith helped to create the situation by crossing the ball into the penalty box. Brewer goalie Katie Harris played the ball perfectly but a last-second deflection created confusion in the goal mouth.
” It was one of those things. It was a tough play. [Harris] made the right decision. The ball just bounced around,” Brewer coach Bill Schwarz said.
The ball bounced off Harris, who made two desperate attempts to collect the ball. A Brewer defender’s attempted clearance went softly to Mooers who lofted a shot over the keeper and into the goal.
Bangor improved to 4-1-1 while the Witches fell to 2-4.
Stacie Bean had given the Witches a 1-0 lead with a goal 11 minutes into the match when she took a direct kick from roughly 20 yards out and perfectly placed the ball in the top left corner of the goal.
“She’s given Brewer a lot of excitement in her career. She’s a good player. I’d like to have her,” Bangor coach Jeff Ingalls said.
Ingalls made some adjustments to the Bangor attack, urging his midfielders to join the attack. The results paid off with 14:33 left in the first half with a goal from Meagan McCrum.
” Coach just told me to ‘move up, move up,’ so I got up there and it came across. Kristin Bogan had an awesome pass and I just kicked it in,” McCrum said.
McCrum’s left-footed shot was taken from the left wing about 12 yards from the goal and she tucked the ball just inside the right post.
Bangor kept Brewer under pressure for large parts of the second half after making a change to their attack. The Rams moved a third player into a forward position. The result was Bangor outshooting the Witches 11-4 in the half.
Bean and Melissa Jacobs provided the Witches with moments of relief with long, penetrating runs into the Rams’ defense and while Bean came close on a second half direct kick, Brewer was unable to come up with a goal.
Harris made 7 saves on 20 shots for Brewer while Bangor goalie Ilyse Angst saved 1 of 8 shots for the Rams.
