SCARBOROUGH – The Brewer Witches used tough defense to edge the Scarborough Red Storm 7-6 in a battle of Class B unbeatens in high school football action Saturday.

Brewer avenged last season’s 36-8 loss to the Red Storm.

Brewer is now 4-0 and Scarborough is 3-1.

Josh Caldwell (22 carries, 81 yards) got the scoring started on Brewer’s first drive, spinning off tacklers for a 3-yard touchdown. Shawn Sutherland then booted what would prove to be a crucial PAT.

Scarborough came right back. Nial DeMena (14 carries, 64 yards) returned the ensuing kickoff 33 yards. Travis Hitchcock sprinted 20 yards on the first play, and six plays later, Mike Slovak got in from 2 yards out.

The Storm were forced to go for two, due to placekicker Ryan Carrier’s absence with an ankle injury. Quarterback Steve McNaughton was sacked on the attempt, and that proved to be the difference.

Jeremiah Richter recorded an interception deep in Scarborough territory for the Witches, after the ball was deflected by Kevin Kotredes.
