Driver’s condition critical following crash at Unity

Milford’s Allen Fletcher, who suffered a head injury in a pro stock race at Unity Raceway Saturday night, remained in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Bangor’s Eastern Maine Medical Center Sunday, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Fletcher suffered the injury on lap 23 of the 35-lap feature and was airlifted to EMMC after being tended to by the track’s emergency team, the Unity ambulance crew and EMTs.

Fletcher was injured when his car spun on the backstretch and hit the banking on the driver’s side. There was a jaws of life at the track that was used to extricate him from the car.

Track manager John Crawford said Fletcher had been a regular at Hermon’s Speedway 95 but when that track’s pro stock class finished up a few weeks ago, he came to Unity to get in some additional racing.

A somber Crawford was shaken by the accident.

“You hate to see anybody hurt. We do this for fun. We don’t do it for the money. It’s in our blood. These guys race because they love it. It adds some excitement to their lives,” said Crawford.

The rest of the racing program was postponed after the accident.
