UMaine rolls, improves to 8-1

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The University of Maine field hockey team ran its winning streak to eight and its record to 8-1 after two victories in America East action over the weekend.

Colbey Smith made four saves on 14 shots and Jen Johnstone had a goal and an assist as the Black Bears beat Hofstra 2-0 Saturday. The Bears then topped Quinnipiac 3-1 on Sunday.

Tara Bedard and Kim Leo assisted on Johnstone’s first-half goal, which came off a penalty corner, and Jana Ouellette added an insurance goal in the second half off a Johnstone pass.

Christine Hickey made five saves on 13 shots for 6-3 Hofstra.

Rachel Hilgar’s goal with 19 minutes left snapped a 1-1 tie and gave the Black Bears the win on Sunday.

Kristy Ferran added an insurance goal three minutes later.

Tara Bedard had equalized for the Bears six minutes after Jackie Langenstein had opened the scoring for Quinnipiac in the first half. Chelsea Osbrey set up Langenstein’s goal.

Bedard’s goal was her seventh on the season.

Quinnipiac, now 6-5, had its six-game winning streak snapped.

USM 3, Eastern Connecticut 1

At Gorham, Renee Heath scored two goals to help lead 7-2 Southern Maine to the win.

Rachael Nimon scored with an assist from Darci Holland while Kayla Vaughan and Sarah Dolley tallied assists and Jessie Superchi stopped five of seven shots.

K.C. Swuecibej scored off a pass from Sharon Kilpatrick for 3-4 Eastern Connecticut while Meredith Bogue faced 12 shots and stopped five.

Husson 3, St. Joseph’s 1

At Standish Sunday, Lexi Harjula tallied two goals to spark the 3-3 Braves.

Bri Searles also scored for Husson of Bangor. Jamie Giles and Becka Fisher combined to make six saves.

Kaitlyn Scott found the back of the net for the 3-6 Monks. Mary Tibbetts stopped 14 shots.

Volleyball

Harvard 3, Maine 0

At Orono Saturday, Mindy Jellin helped lead 4-6 Harvard with 11 digs and 41 assists as the Crimson defeated Maine 30-22, 30-26, 35-33.

Kaili Jordan had 10 kills and 14 digs for 4-10 Maine while Carmen Gabriel had 11 digs and 24 assists. Leah Guidinger helped out with nine kills and 17 digs.

Dartmouth 3, Maine 1

At Hanover, N.H. Sunday, Sarah Nadler had 24 digs, 13 kills, and three assists as Dartmouth downed Maine 30-17, 30-21, 23-30, 35-33.

Kaili Jordan led the 4-11 Black Bears with 15 kills and 15 digs while Carmen Gabriel had 18 digs, nine kills, and 28 assists. Amber Sammons chipped in with 20 digs for Maine while Alaina Keparek added 10 digs.

Women’s soccer

Maine 4, Marist 0

At Orono, Kate Crawford scored a pair of goals and assisted on another and Naomi Welsh made one save on three shots as the Bears snapped a five-game losing streak.

Maine is now 3-5.

Maija Kaldro scored what proved to be the game-winner at the 40:27 mark off an Allison Kelly feed before Crawford put the game away with goals 1:39 apart in the second half off assists from Erin Corey and Heather Hathorn, respectively. Hathorn capped the scoring off a Crawford pass.

Mellanie Nai made seven saves on 25 shots for 1-6 Marist.

Thomas 9, St. Joseph’s 3

At Waterville, Mary Pratt and Erica Gallant had a hat trick apiece and Amanda Martin had two goals and two assists as Thomas triumphed.

Molly Neider scored twice for St. Joseph’s and Liz Arbalaez was credited with the other goal.

UM-Farmington 2, Lyndon 1

At Farmington, Megan Woodcock scored a goal on a penalty kick at 34:33 in the second half to give UM-Farmington the win.

Woodcock also scored the game-tying goal off a corner kick by Jodi Dodge, also in the second half. Alyson Pontbriand faced five shots and stopped three for 6-1 UMF.

Husson 6, UM-Fort Kent 1

At Fort Kent Saturday, Beatriz DeYcaza scored four goals and had an assist to carry 2-6 Husson to victory.

Kristen Pelletier added a goal and two assists while Deidra Ham contributed with a goal of her own. Melissa Achorn recorded an assist while Meg Taylor made five saves on six shots.

Megan Forman scored on a penalty kick for the 1-5 University of Maine at Fort Kent while Whitney Zettergren and Jamie Pelletier combined to stop 13 of 23 shots.

Maine Maritime 1, Mount Ida 0

At Castine, Amy Asselin scored what would be the winning goal for 3-2-2 Maine Maritime seven minutes into the game.

Meghan Marshall made 14 saves on 18 shots for the Lady Mariners.

Middlebury 4, Colby 1

At Waterville Saturday, Meg Bonney’s two goals lifted the Panthers past the White Mules.

Lauren Gremelspacher scored off a pass from Christine O’Donnell for 2-3 Colby.

Men’s soccer

Thomas 2, St. Joseph’s 1

At Waterville, Rick Kelley scored the first goal and set up Scott Mullen’s game-winner 11 minutes into the second half.

Dan Burdin assisted on Kelley’s first-half goal and Ryan Conley finished with 11 saves.

Ian MacLauchlen scored for St. Joseph’s off a Mike Long pass and Joe Scanlon finished with five saves.

Mount Ida 5, MMA 2

At Castine, Diego Centurian scored three goals, two on penalty kicks, as Mount Ida improved to 2-6-1 in a game that featured all the scoring in the second half.

Derek Wilding’s penalty kick and Anthony Blair’s unassisted goal pulled Maine Maritime Academy within two.

Dan Boreham made three saves on 14 shots for the winners while Dan Loebel and Josh McLellan teamed up for 10 saves on 19 shots for 1-5 Maine Maritime Academy.

Middlebury 3, Colby 0

At Waterville, Middlebury scored two goals in the second half to take the win from Colby on Saturday.

Andrew Danzinger stopped three shots for 3-2 Colby.

Rhode Island 5, USM 1

At Providence, R.I., Corey Lopes scored two goals in the second half to help lead 8-2 Rhode Island College to the win Saturday.

Andy Budelman scored Southern Maine’s goal unassisted while Chris Willard made eight saves on 20 shots for the 2-3-1 Huskies.

UM-Farmington 6, Lyndon 1

At Farmington, Brian Mawhinney and Todd Chamberlain each scored two goals on Saturday to help carry 2-0 UM-Farmington past Lyndon State.

Adam Zukowski and David Sithole added goals while Ryan Hersey, Noah Peet, and Seabren Reeves combined to allow only one goal.

UM-Fort Kent 2, Husson 0

At Fort Kent, Evan Watson scored two unassisted goals to lead the (5-1) University of Maine at Fort Kent past Husson on Saturday.

Chad Bouchard made six saves in net.

Matt Goodman stopped eight shots while in goal for 2-4 Husson College.

UM-Fort Kent 3, UM-Machias 0

At Fort Kent, Sunday, Josh Roy scored two goals to help give UM-Fort Kent the win.

Evan Watson scored on a pass from Juan Murphy while Gintaras Lenkutis and Aadil Mootassem each recorded assists. Chad and Nick Bouchard combined to make four saves for the Bengals.

Courtney Campbell made six saves for the 4-2 University of Maine at Machias.
