Alfond gives Husson $100,000 for Winkin Complex

Harold Alfond, whose $1 million gift enabled Husson College to become the first New England school to have FieldTurf installed on its baseball diamond, has given longtime friend John Winkin another $100,000 to put toward phase three of the John Winkin Baseball Complex.

That occurred Saturday, on the field, at the dedication of the Harold Alfond Diamond in Bangor. Winkin is the vice president of sports leadership and an assistant baseball coach at the college.

Phase three involves the installation of lights, bleachers, rest rooms, locker rooms and concession stands.

Winkin said Alfond’s gift “springboards the next phase.

“It was totally unexpected and completely spontaneous and genuine,” said Winkin. “That is typical Harold Alfond.”

He said phase three is in the “planning, funding and timetable stages.”

Winkin jumpstarted the project by donating $250,000 to upgrade the facility and build dugouts and a multipurpose building behind home plate.

Winkin and Penobscot County Commissioner Peter Baldacci would like to bring minor league baseball back to the area after the departure of the Northeast League’s Bangor Blue Ox in 1997 following a two-year run.

“The facility and the unique turf has attracted the interest of at least two professional leagues,” said Winkin, who is cautiously optimistic. “The area and what it has to offer, its tradition and the success the Blue Ox had also bode well for the community.”

Winkin said representatives from Manchester, N.H., have visited the facility to check out the FieldTurf for possible installation at their multiuse Gill Stadium.

Manchester’s American Legion team will be invited to play in a tournament at Husson this summer.

Winkin also announced that Charlie Eshbach, the president and general manager of the AA Eastern League Portland Seadogs, will address his sports management class Thursday and will be featured at an 11 a.m. press conference at the Hall of Fame room in the new baseball building.

“I think of him as the best minor league executive around,” said Winkin.

The Seadogs entered into an affiliation agreement with the Boston Red Sox earlier this month.
