BREWER – An 18-year-old Bangor man was still being evaluated at a Bangor hospital Monday night, hours after Brewer police said the injured motorist fled on foot from a head-on collision.

Anthony Ross was the driver of a white Ford station wagon that swerved into the path of an oncoming car on South Main Street near the Interstate 395 eastbound interchange shortly after 6 p.m., according to police.

Ross was bleeding profusely from his right arm when Brewer police Officer Rich Smith caught up with him as the injured man made his way on foot up the embankment toward the Veterans Remembrance Bridge. A witness reported seeing Ross with a bottle of alcohol in his hands as he left the accident scene, but no bottle could be found in the wooded area where Ross had been, said Brewer Sgt. Perry Antone.

Ross received medical attention in the Capital Ambulance and was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where a nursing supervisor reported about 11 p.m. that Ross was still being evaluated. Three other people in the accident, a hitchhiker Ross had apparently picked up and two people in the other car, suffered minor injuries. No information was available about them.

Minutes before the accident, Bangor police issued a radio bulletin to be on the lookout for Ross’ station wagon, which had been seen in the Hammond Street area with Ross suspected of being intoxicated.

A blood sample was taken at the hospital to be analyzed to determine his blood alcohol content. Authorities prepared summonses to be issued to Ross for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, operating a motor vehicle without a license, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and illegal attachment of plates, Antone said.

Brewer, Holden and Orrington police directed traffic along the busy interchange, while authorities investigated the accident and tow trucks removed the two cars.
