BALTIMORE – Mike Bordick put on his uniform Sunday, knowing it could be his last game in the major leagues.
It might have been an emotional moment, except for the fact that Bordick felt the same way every time he laced up his spikes.
“I approach every day as if it’s the last,” he said. “Any player with pride approaches every game as if it could be the last.”
But this one really might have been Bordick’s finale. His contract expired, and the 37-year-old will discuss his future with his family in the weeks ahead.
“There are a lot of factors, a lot of things to sort out,” he said. “My kids are getting older. It’s hard enough just on my wife. They’ve all been great and very supportive; we’re going to have a nice big family discussion.”
Bordick had an amazing season in the field, making just one error and setting major league records for consecutive errorless games, and chances, at shortstop. But he hit .232, and there’s a chance he won’t be asked back on a team in the midst of a youth movement.
If he can’t play for the Orioles, then Bordick probably won’t play for anyone.
“No, I don’t think so,” he said, noting his family’s love for Baltimore. “I kind of said to myself that this is the only place that I would come back and play.”
