Bucksport beats up Searsport Taylor scores 3 goals, Golden Bucks win 8th

BUCKSPORT – Although undefeated at 7-0-1 entering their game with Searsport Monday, the Bucksport girls soccer team was still waiting for Jessie Taylor, their top scorer from a year ago, to break out.

Not that Taylor hasn’t been contributing. The senior striker was leading the team in assists but the Golden Bucks needed her to find her scoring touch against the Vikings who they had tied 1-1 earlier this season.

Taylor found her touch, scoring three times as Bucksport cruised to a 7-0 win over Searsport.

“I couldn’t be happier for her,” Bucksport coach Jack Gordon said. “She’s a scorer and she’s been clogged up a bit. That was a good game for her and all the way around too for our team.”

The Golden Bucks came out firing, forcing Searsport goalie Mo Hall into making a save 20 seconds into the game on a Taylor shot after Elissa Gordon had sent her in alone on goal.

But 30 seconds later, Bucksport opened the scoring on a goal that Hall could do nothing about.

The play started with a run down the right wing by junior Alice Andrews, whose crossing pass found Jill Richards at the far post. The sophomore tried a one-time shot that went off her thigh toward the goal. Taylor stepped in and blasted a left-footed shot into the top left corner.

“We used to be a second-half team,” Taylor said. This year our big focus is coming out, right off the bat and get them back on their heels.”

Bucksport kept the pressure on with Gordon, Taylor and Andrews working together to create a number of chances before finally breaking through for a second goal with 16:59 remaining in the half. Again it was Andrews getting things started when she fired a shot from the right wing that Hall managed to tip. But the ball fell to Brittni Adams at the left post and she easily slammed it in.

Gordon, Richards and Chelsea Whitten also scored goals for Bucksport. Richards’ goal was the result of a sensational play by Taylor.

With Bucksport on the attack, a Golden Bucks pass seemed destined to be too long for Taylor and headed for the end line. But Taylor raced to the ball and used a bicycle kick to send it back into the penalty area where Andrews pushed a quick pass to Gordon, who drove a shot inside the right post from 12 yards out.

Brittany Damon and Liz Gomm combined to make seven saves on nine shots for 8-0-1 Bucksport.

Hall had a strong game in goal for the 6-1-1 Vikings, making 14 saves on 43 shots.

“We knew coming in that they were a very talented team and if we didn’t have our best game we certainly be in rough shape and it happened that way,” Searsport coach Mike Garcelon said. “I told the kids tonight you write this one off and we go and we march through to the next one.”
