PORTLAND – First lady Laura Bush has accepted an invitation to attend the reopening of the restored McLellan House and L.D.M. Sweat Memorial Galleries at the Portland Museum of Art on Saturday.
“She will cut a ribbon and make a few remarks. A few other people will speak, as well, but her remarks will be the centerpiece,” said Daniel O’Leary, the museum’s director.
Festivities begin at 10 a.m. with musical performances. The first lady is scheduled to speak at about 10:30 a.m. from the steps of the McLellan House.
The Federal-style mansion, built in 1801, and the adjoining galleries housed the museum until 1980, when construction began on the modern John Shipman Payson building.
The reopening caps a three-year, $13.5 million campaign to restore the home and galleries. The celebration includes musical performances on three stages, children’s activities and food vendors.
The expanded museum will open at 11 a.m.
Portions of High, Spring and Free streets will be closed to vehicles from 7 a.m. to around 9 p.m. Saturday.
President Bush will not attend. He is expected to be in New Hampshire, stumping for Republican candidates.
