INDIAN TOWNSHIP – Two people were elected Monday to the tribal council in a special election.

Out of a field of 19 candidates, incumbent Jeannette Parker walked away with 71 votes, while William Nicholas garnered 80 votes.

The special election was held after tribal Councilors Robert Newell and Joseph Socobasin were elected governor and lieutenant governor during the general election held earlier in September.

Their elevation to the tribe’s two top seats left two two-year seats vacant on the council.

Parker, who ran in the regular election in September, lost at that time to Dennis Tomah Sr. who received 101 votes.

Dana Newell and incumbent Richard Sabattus also ran in the general election and received 90 and 73 votes. Parker trailed that field with 52 votes.
