Seal Harbor man charged in break-ins

ELLSWORTH – A Seal Harbor man has been charged with multiple counts of burglary after being extradited earlier this month back from Florida to Maine.

Allan Greene, 19, is accused of breaking into a Bar Harbor restaurant, a store in Lamoine, construction businesses in Hancock and Bar Harbor, and several Ellsworth firms, according to Hancock County Assistant District Attorney Patrick Larson.

Last December, Greene and William Mawhinney, 18, of Bar Harbor allegedly broke into Rika’s restaurant in Bar Harbor and took $500, Larson said Monday. They immediately drove to Bangor after the burglary and used the stolen money to buy heroin, he said.

In February and March of this year, according to police, Greene also reportedly broke into Midas Auto Service, Mr. Quick’s Oil Lube service, Prompto oil change service, About Women, Northeast Oral Surgery and Charles Holt Inc., all of which are in Ellsworth. Greene allegedly burglarized Midas and Mr. Quick again in March, they said. Larson said Greene that same month also broke into the Lamoine General Store and into the Hancock and Bar Harbor offices of Harold MacQuinn, Inc.

According to Bar Harbor Police Chief Nate Young, his department received a tip several months later that Greene was in Florida.

“I have no idea what he was doing down there,” Young said Tuesday. “I don’t think he was working.” Young said he is not sure where Greene had been in Florida when law enforcement officials caught up with him.

Greene was indicted in August in connection with the restaurant and general store burglaries. Last week in Hancock County Superior Court, Greene pleaded innocent to the charges stemming from those break-ins.

Greene came away empty-handed from some of the break-ins, but reportedly took between $50 and $150 from those where he found cash, Larson said. All the businesses had windows smashed or doors forced open, he said.

Greene’s attorney, Jeff Toothaker of Ellsworth, said Monday his client was in Florida for about six months before he was brought back to Maine. He said his client appears healthy and claims to have changed his habits.

“He said he was off drugs,” Toothaker said. “He was doing well.”

Toothaker said he and prosecutors are reviewing the charges against Greene and discussing possible options.

“Right now, we’re trying to determine how many, where and what,” Toothaker said.
