BANGOR – On Sept. 21, members of the 101st Air Refueling Wing, Maine Air National Guard, dedicated a monument to the men and women who patriotically served the state of Maine and the country for more than 20 years.

An F-89 Scorpion fighter jet flown by the 101st Air Refueling Wing 1957-1969 is located near the entrance of the Air National Guard Base and serves as a lasting reminder of the hard work and commitment of those that served the unit, officials said.

The ceremony coincided with the 2002 annual Retirees Association meeting which drew more than 200 retirees who had served 20 or more years in the military. Members and spouses have gathered for three years to share stories, renew old friendships and make new memories.

In July 1969, the Maine Air National Guard flew its last mission with the F-89 fighter, which was a static display at the Waterville Airport for 33 years.

Last year, after volunteers refurbished the plane with spare parts, soap and water and paint, it was moved to its new home in Bangor.

Master of ceremonies for the dedication was retired Brig. Gen. Nicholas Emerita, who flew the Scorpion’s last mission.
