BANGOR – After several meetings with Vietnam War veterans from several Maine military organizations, Glenn and Diane Hines have been engaged to sculpt a memorial honoring Vietnam veterans.

The monument will be located on the Cole Museum lawn near Interstate 395 and the Vietnam-era military tank.

The monument will include a bronze, three-person statue of a nurse, a wounded Vietnam veteran being assisted by a foot soldier or an aircrew member, to be determined. Anticipated completion date is October 2003.

The Cole Foundation will be the primary sponsor for the memorial but is seeking and will welcome financial support from any sources for naming of the individual castings. Veterans living or deceased who served in the Vietnam War can be sponsored.

Sponsorship of a bronze plaque listing each of the 346 Maine Vietnam veterans killed or missing in action also is available.

State Rep. Russell Treadwell, a Vietnam war pilot, will pursue state legislative recognition of memorial.

For more information or to sponsor, call 990-3600 or mail 405 Perry Road, Bangor 04401 by Oct. 15 as the named and individual figures will be sculptured starting Nov. 1.
