After World War II, there were some who advocated a pre-emptive strike against Soviet Russia. They said:
. Russia’s objective is to establish worldwide communism.
. Russia will probably soon develop the atomic bomb.
. When it does, it seems likely it will use it to further its ends.
. Therefore, it would be foolhardy for us to wait for that to happen.
Fortunately, a minority held this view. Presidents Truman and Eisenhower and the United States Congress did not.
We need to be guided by morality, experience and wisdom these days. I have appreciated your balanced, thoughtful editorials on Iraq.
