Curtis leads Rockland by Old Orchard 22-14 Minutemen, Orono, Foxcroft gain victories

OLD ORCHARD – Senior tailback Mike Curtis scored three touchdowns, including a 76-yard kickoff return, to lead the Rockland Tigers to a 22-14 high school football victory over the Old Orchard Beach Seagulls Friday night.

Curtis also ran for a 25-yard TD in the first quarter and clinched the victory for Rockland when he sped to a 42-yard TD in the second quarter. Curtis finished with 228 yards on 21 carries while teammate Trevor Davis chipped in with 53 yards on 11 carries.

Josh Chase scored both Old Orchard’s touchdowns, one on a 2-yard run and the other on a 23- yard pass from Alex Chou. Chou completed eight of 19 passes for 151 yards.

Bucksport 51, John Bapst 0

At Bucksport, John Harvey scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to help secure the lead and the win for the Golden Bucks who improve to 4-1.

Joey Carmichael scored on a 34-yard pass from Dow Cain, rushed for two points and completed a 16-yard pass to Drew Pooler who scored in the fourth. Chris Woodman made a three-yard run in the first to get the scoring started while Gunner Siverly scored on a five-yard run. Nick Tymoczko scored on a 17-yard run while Trevor Lalonde made five successful kicks for the Golden Bucks.

Foxcroft 28, Mattanawcook 14

At Lincoln, Foxcroft relied on a balanced offense and took advantage of late-game errors by Mattanawcook to continue their undefeated season and improve to 5-0.

Matt Earnest, in addition to scoring on a 44-yard pass from Josh Withee, intercepted the ball and ran 55 yards for the final touchdown of the game. Withee threw a total 51 yards of touchdown passes for Foxcroft while Sands ran for only 10 yards to score two touchdowns. White had four successful kicks for the Ponies.

Tom Lasko was a key defensive and offensive player for 3-2 Mattanawcook, receiving an 18-yard pass from Dustin Hanscom and kicking two extra points. John Carney threw an 18-yard pass to John Woodman who scored Mattanawcook’s second touchdown.

Winslow 16, MDI 6

At Mount Desert, quarterback Josh Lapointe scored a pair of touchdowns and Derek Runnels rushed for 102 yards on 16 carries as Winslow improved to 2-3.

Lapointe opened the scoring with a two-yard run in the third quarter and he threw to Andrew Millett for the two-point conversion.

Dave Zabala pulled the Trojans within two by busting 21 yards for a touchdown but John Lewis was stopped just short of the end zone on the two-point conversion rush.

Lapointe’s 38-yard scamper iced the game and the Raiders added a safety when MDI was called for a penalty in its end zone.

Marty McCaslin carried the ball 13 times for 62 yards for the Raiders and their defensive effort was spearheaded by Andy Mette’s nine tackles and Ben McPherson’s six.

Lewis rushed for a game-high 111 yards on 17 carries for the 1-4 Trojans. Linebacker Zabala was in on 12 tackles, including a sack, and safety Donnie Mace was involved in 10 tackles while also recovering a fumble and making an interception.

Stearns 26, Dexter 6

At Millinocket, tailback Matt Barnett capped an eight-play, 46-yard drive with a 27-yard touchdown jaunt to break a 6-6 tie and trigger a 20-point fourth quarter for the Minutemen.

He added a 20-yard touchdown run after Matt Wark had rambled 36 yards for a score.

Stearns is now 2-3 while Dexter fell to 1-4.

Kevin McLaughlin opened the scoring in the second quarter by hauling in an 80-yard pass from Derek DiFrederico but Adam Russell answered for Dexter with a 65-yard run.

Barnett ran for 120 yard on 18 carries, Rick Kraul racked up 56 more on seven carries and DiFrederico was five-for-nine for 140 yards. He also ran for 40 yards on five carries.

Russell had a game-high 133 rushing yards on 18 carries.

Belfast 49, Old Town 14

At Belfast, Jeff Parenteau, carrying the ball 20 times for 142 yards, led the Lions victory with three rushing touchdowns as he carried the ball 20 times for 142 yards.

Parenteau scored the first two touchdowns of the game for Belfast on carries of two and five yards before John Lear ran for a 26-yard score. Lear followed on the next possession with a 30- yard run.

Matt Welch’s 25-yard run and Josh Aldus’ three-yard run pushed the Belfast lead to 43-0 before Old Town was able to get on the board.

Wayne Temple used a 73-yard fumble return to get the Indians going. Belfast’s Parenteau countered with a four-yard score, before Old Town closed out the evening with Jared Goody connecting with Jason Adams for a 16-yard score.

Brandon Eastmna led the Old Town offense with two carries for 73 yards.

At Orono, Ryan Levesque scored two first-quarter touchdowns and carried the ball 21 times for 138 yards to lead Orono past Maine Central Institute.

With a 12-0 lead, the Red Riots added a 54-yard touchdown pass from Jason Coleman to Jeff Miller before the Huskies got on the board with a four-yard run from Kevin Williams.

Miller and Coleman connected again in the third quarter on a 28-yard pass.

Coleman finished the night completing 12 of 16 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns.

Kevin Williams scored the final touchdown of the night for MCI with a 36 yard run. Williams carried the ball eight times for 57 yards.

Orono’s Mardy Simon finished the scoring for both sides with a 66-yard run.

Simon finished with three carries for 70 yards.

Kyle Spinney led both defenses for Orono with 10 tackles.

East Grand 3, Lubec 1

At Danforth, Darius Parker scored a pair of goals and Seth Preston made six saves as the Vikings improved to 5-6.

Steven Gray had the other East Grand goal. Isiah Gillis and James Crone had assists.

Chris Jones scored for 0-5 Lubec and Jordan Hall made 14 saves on 31 shots.

Shead 6, Calais 0

At Calais, Jason Bones scored three goals to lead the Tigers of Eastport to their ninth win of the season.

Ricky Kroll, Ben Maloney and Michael Bernard also scored for Shead. Maloney and Teddy Cummings each contributed two assist in the win for 9-2 Shead.

Chris Woodside stopped 12 of the 30 shots he faced for 1-8-1 Calais.

Washington Acad. 2, J-Beals 1

At East Machias, while Andy Walther’s 11th goal of the season gave the Raiders an early 1-0, it was his assist that gave Washington Academy the win.

Walther scored with 5:45 left in the first half on a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead. Jonesport responded when Ben Durkee tied the game with 30:16 remaining in the contest.

Walther broke the tie when he sent a pass over to Nenad Micic with 11 minutes remaining. Jason Labonte stopped four shots for 8-1-0 Washington Academy.

Machias 5, Narraguagus 2

At Harrington, Chris Correll scored four goals to lead the Knights to victory.

Ed St. Pierre added the final goal of the game for 3-7-1 Narraguagus.

Austin Roberts notched three assists in the win. Marcus Frutchey stopped nine shots for the Knights.

Corey Skeate led Machias with a goal and an assist. Saben Rossi also scored for the Bulldogs. Erin Peltier had eight saves for Machias.

Islesboro 7, Chop Point 0

At Woolwich, Gavin Harkins scored four goals to lead 7-0 Islesboro past Chop Point.

Jon Bolduc scored a goal and gad two assists while David Pike and T.L. Tutor each added a goal and an assist. Rory Diffen stopped two of two shots in net.

Logan Shaffer made 21 saves on 34 shots for 1-5 Chop Point.

Girls soccer

Schenck 3, Katahdin 0

At Sherman Station, three different players scored as Shcenck moved to three games above .500.

Jodi King, Laura Davis and Lindsay Nicholson each scored for the Wolverines of East Millinocket. Nicholson also had an assist.

Megan Carey stopped four shots for 6-3 Schenck. Jayme Green had six saves for 4-8 Katahdin.

MDI 2, GSA 1

At Blue Hill, Jenna Gordius scored the game-winning goal with 23:37 remaining in the second half as the visiting Trojans notched their first win of the season.

Kara Horton scored the first goal of the game for Mount Desert Island on a direct kick before Anastasia Osage tied the game on an assist from Bri Bamford for George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill.

Trina Smith had eight saves for 1-8 MDI. Liz Tyler blocked 10 of the 13 shots faced for the 3-5 Eagles.

Dexter 3, Foxcroft 0

At Foxcroft, three players scored unassisted goals to help carry 9-2 Dexter to the win.

Sabrina Cote, Lindsey Turner and Emily Whalen scored a goal apiece while Dapne Robichaud faced 13 shots and stopped nine.

Ashley Marden made seven saves on nine shots for 0-8-1 Foxcroft.

Greenville 2, Shead 0

At Greenville, Jillian Bouley scored at 20:30 in the second half with an assist from Kahla Lander to secure the lead for 5-3-1 Greenville.

Bouley assisted Greenville’s first goal which was scored by Kristen Suetherland. Bethany Bartley stopped for of four shots.

Roliza Dewitt faced 15 shots for 5-4-1 Shead and stopped 13.

Field hockey

Dexter 5, Nokomis 0

At Dexter, the Tigers continued their unbeaten streak with a pair of goals each from Michia McCusick and Sarah Wyman as they topped the visiting Warriors.

Meagan Fogarty, who leads the Dexter offense with 16 goals for the season, added a goal and two assists. Courtney McCormick contributed an assist. Dexter has remained unbeaten through 46 games, including postseason action, since October of 1999.

Cindy Koscielny earned the shutout for Dexter with six saves. Brandi Davis stopped 10 of the 19 shots she faced for Nokomis.

Foxcroft 2, Hampden 1

At Hampden, Jess Burgoyne scored the game winning goal for the Ponies with 4:32 remaining in double overtime.

Tamlyn Frederick assisted on the game-winning score for Foxcroft Academy. Harita Redd gave the Ponies the 1-0 lead in the first period before Hampden’s Sarah Peters tied the game on a pass from Christie Mosley.

Megan Ryder stopped 15 of the 16 shots she faced for 9-0 Foxcroft Academy. Caroline Samp saved eight of 10 shots for 5-5 Hampden.

Old Town 4, Hermon 1

At Old Town, Amanda Littlefield scored two goals and had an assist to help lead 5-3-1 Old Town to victory.

Amanda Paradis had a goal and an assist while Aylssa Dow scored with an assists from Mallory Dill and Emelie Richard made two saves on three shots.

Alayna White scored for 0-9-1 Hermon with an assist from Jessica Watson while Meghan McCready stopped three of 10 shots.
