Sportsmen spend plenty of time sitting around in deer camp sharing their opinions on various issues. Every so often, they get the chance to share those opinions – and ask questions – of the people directly involved in the decision-making process.

One such opportunity will be offered on Oct. 16 as the Bucks Mills Rod & Gun Club hosts a Sportsman’s Forum in Bucksport.

The event will begin with a spaghetti supper at 6 p.m. ($5 per person covers the feast). From 7 to 9 p.m., sportsmen will be able to bend the ear of Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Commissioner Lee Perry, as well as other DIF&W staffers and DIF&W advisory council member David Wardwell.

Among the topics to be covered will be the warden service, the status of local fisheries, lake access, and hunting updates.

The Bucks Mills Rod & Gun Club is located on Bucks Mills Road. Admission to the meeting is free – only those who plan on eating will pay the $5 fee.

Dixmont club plans event

The snow might not be falling yet, but it’s not too early to begin thinking about winter pursuits.

The Dixmont Gold Crest Riders will give you that chance on Oct. 13 as they’ll host a combination supper and meeting at their clubhouse on Cates Road.

Members of the snowmobile club and landowners will eat for free, while visitors will be expected to pay a small fee for their supper.

Traditional Maine community supper fare will be served: baked beans and casseroles will take center stage, but plenty of salads, homemade yeast rolls, and homemade pies will fill out a plate nicely.

The supper will run from 4:30 to 6 p.m., and a club meeting will be held beginning at 7.

Organizers say the supper will also give people the chance to tour the newly refurbished clubhouse.

Maine Snowmobile Show begins

While we’re on the topic of snowmobiling, enthusiasts might want to head to Augusta this weekend for the Maine Snowmobile Show, which runs through Sunday.

The show is being held at the Augusta Civic Center. Hours are 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday.

The sixth annual event features the latest model snowmobiles and accessories, as well as trail grooming equipment and information about rentals, resorts, and safety.

Exhibitor-sponsored prize drawings will be held throughout the weekend, and sledders will benefit from a one-stop shopping experience: They can check out new sleds, buy a helmet, and make reservations for some of the state’s snowmobiling hotspots.

Admission is $5, but children under 12 get in free.

The event is sponsored by the Maine Snowmobile Association.
