Cranberry Isles spirit

To stereotype the residents and recent voters of the town of Cranberry Isles as either the wealthy summer Dockers crowd or the working year-round Dickies set was both inflammatory and inaccurate reporting of the attendees of a critical special town meeting held on Sept. 25.

Our town has many summer residents who are hard-working and many year-round residents who are well off. The long-standing affability among residents is a very special part of our communities. No matter our politics or incomes, we all care about our islands and their future. While some felt strongly about whether or not to buy property in the town of Southwest Harbor, others knew not how they would vote until the last minute. There was no simple division of summer vs. year-round as indicated by [Bangor Daily New reporter] Liz Chapman.

One resident wrote in a letter to me – it is now a done deal, for better or worse. The task ahead is to make it work. Another who voted against the purchase has volunteered to join the committee who will look into alternate funding for the project. These actions are a better indication of the spirit of our town than your reporter’s version of a deep divide with tensions and bad feelings that might linger.
