FARMINGTON – A student at the University of Maine-Farmington has told campus police that she was raped by an unknown man in a student parking lot.
The 18-year-old woman told officers she was raped last Thursday night by a 6-foot-tall white male in his early 30s.
The report is the first of its kind on the Farmington campus in at least 12 years, said Tom Donahue, spokesman for the school. Because the victim did not know the assailant, who was apparently unarmed, authorities are working under the assumption that he is not a student, campus police Officer Michael Pike said.
Students were informed of the incident through an e-mail and a display in the student center on Tuesday.
Security officers are urging students to travel in pairs, to be aware of their surroundings, and to use a campus escort service.
