In recent weeks we’ve discussed jewelry shopping. To wrap up, here are some basics to help you get the best product for your dollar.
Compare quality, price and service. If you’re not familiar with jewelers in your area, ask family members, friends and co-workers for recommendations. Ask for the store’s refund and return policy before you make a purchase.
Check for appropriate markings on metal jewelry. Ask whether pearls are natural, cultured or imitation. Know whether a gemstone is natural, laboratory-created or imitation, if it has been treated, if changes are permanent or if special care is required.
At the time of purchase, make sure the jeweler writes on the sales receipt key information such as the gem’s weight or size.
If you are looking for jewelry online, shop with companies you know or do your homework before buying to make sure a business is legitimate.
Get details about the product and be sure you have a street address to write to or a phone number to call if you have a question or need help.
If you have a problem with a jewelry purchase, first try to resolve it with the jeweler.
