Kapler, Higgins lead Hampden by Indians Lisbon, Mattanawcook notch victories

HAMPDEN – Trainer Kapler and John Higgins each ran for a pair of touchdowns to lead the Hampden Academy Broncos to a 48-6 high school football win over the Old Town Indians Friday night.

Broncos posted their first win.

Higgins ran a yard for the game’s first TD, and Kapler ran 12 yards for his first score in the first quarter.

Hampden scored four times in the second quarter to put the game out of reach.

Jeremy Tyler took a pass from quarterback Clayton Tunney 13 yards for a TD, followed by TD runs by Ryan Bennett (15 yards), Higgins (6 yards), and Kapler (7 yards).

Justin Preston’s 18-yard run in the third quarter closed out Hampden’s scoring.

Travis Smith’s 13-yard pass to Ben Johnson in the fourth quarter put the Indians on the board.

Hampden rushed for 428 yards on 50 carries for the game, with Kapler getting 156 on 18 carries and Higgins 116 on 13. Kyle Dalton was the Broncos’ leading tackler with 10.

At Rockland, John Tefft ran for 134 yards on 13 carries, scored two touchdowns and kicked two extra points for Lisbon. Joe Schreiber ran for 71 yards on 19 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Mike Curtis rushed for 145 yards on 22 carries for Rockland. Trevor Davis had eight rushes for 45 yards.

Mattanawcook 23, Orono 6

At Orono, Dustin Hanscom threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jon Carney with 5:03 left in the first quarter to open up the scoring for Mattanawcook.

Tyler Gardiner ran for the two point conversion on the first TD and also ran for a 5-yard touchdown with 1:28 remaining in the first quarter.

Mattanawcook’s John Woodman intercepted a Jason Coleman pass with 1:38 left in the second quarter to run 40 yards for the touchdown to cap the scoring for the Lynx.

Jason Coleman scored Orono’s TD on a 1-yard rush with 6:29 left in the game.

At Millinocket, Ashley Freeman scored off a corner with no time remaining in the game to give the Crusaders the victory.

Chelsea Atkinson assisted on the winning goal for the 7-6 Crusaders of Bangor and Julia Sleeper finished with 10 saves on 14 shots.

For 6-6 Stearns, Kristen Bradbury made six saves on seven shots.

Brewer 2, Hermon 1

At Hermon, Carolyn McAvoy scored the game-winning goal with an assist from Tricia Hamm with 3:38 left in the first half to give the Witches the win.

Melissa Wolfe scored the tying goal with 8:49 left in the first half for 3-8-1 Brewer. Sarah England made nine saves on 10 shots.

Kathryn Cyr scored the game’s first goal with 15:13 left in the first half and Meagan McCready stopped 10 of 12 shots for 0-11 Hermon.

Boys soccer

John Bapst 2, Hampden 0

At Hampden, A.J. Stein scored the game’s first goal with an assist from Brandon Freeman and Alex Means scored their second goal.

Rick Hathaway stopped the only shot he saw for 7-5-1 John Bapst of Bangor.

Kenny Mayor made 10 saves on 12 shots for 5-7 Hampden.

Greenville 3, Buckfield 0

At Greenville, Jonah Lizotte scored two goals to carry the Lakers to victory.

Rory Owens scored their other goal and David Whitman and Nathan Woodbury each made an assist. Gregory Aucoin blocked all eight shots he faced for 10-3 Greenville.

Jeremy Stevens made 11 saves on 21 shots for 9-5-2 Buckfield.

Chop Point 2, Liberty 0

At Blue Hill, Ian Dunn scored a goal and made an assist to lead Chop Point of Woolwich.

Tim Rickta added a goal and Logan Shaffer stopped all 18 shots he faced for 1-7 Chop Point.

Tyler Leath and Kori Bailey combined to save seven of nine shots for 1-7 Liberty.

Piscataquis 6, Penquis 2

At Milo, Chase Burdin racked up four goals to help the Pirates of Guilford improve their record to 8-0-5.

John Garrett-Young scored a goal and added an assist and Ryan Bush scored a goal. Josh Luellen made eight saves on 13 shots for 8-0-5 Piscataquis.

Justin Allen scored both of the Patriots’ goals and Jordan Allen had an assist for 5-2 Penquis. Kevin Nason stopped 17 of 25 shots.

Old Town 5, Orono 2

At Orono, Tyson O’Keefe and Kevin Emerson both scored two goals and made one assist to lead the Indians past their rival.

Josh Fournier also scored a goal. Tyler Tracewski and Andrew Mitchell combined to stop six of eight shots for 10-2-1 Old Town.

Simon Bilyk scored both goals for the 2-9-2 Red Riots and Evan James made seven saves on 12 shots.

JV: Old Town 5-0

Sumner 3, Machias 3 (2OT)

At East Sullivan, Gil Richards scored on a direct kick from 30 yards out as time ran out in regulation to lift Machias into the tie with the Tigers.

Chris Correll and Todd Stevens, with an assist from Correll, also tallied for the 11-0-2 Bulldogs. Ed St. Pierre made 18 saves on 30 shots.

Christian Knoeler scored one goal and assisted on another to pace the 5-6-2 Tigers. Jake Viveiros and Roger Sargent also scored for Sumner, and Will Seyffer and Jeff Malloy posted assists. Carlos Velencia turned back seven of the 13 shots he faced.

Islesboro 7, Averill 0

At Hinckley, Jonathan Bolduc scored four goals and Gavin Harkins added three goals with an assist to power the Eagles.

Nate Gorham, T.L. Tutor, and David Pike each had one assist and Rory Diffin stopped eight of nine shots for 9-1 Islesboro.

Christian Gregor made 25 saves on 37 shots for 2-9-1 Averill.

Schenck 2, Houlton 0

At Houlton, Tyler Thompson scored the game’s first goal with an assist by Seth Johnston with 23 minutes into the first half and it stood up as the winner for the Wolverines.

Tim Troxell scored the second goal with 12 minutes left in the gam and Mike Rossignol stopped all three shots he faced for 8-3-2 Schenck of East Millinocket.

Erik O’Connell made eight saves on 10 shots for 1-6-5 Houlton.

Girls soccer

Woodland 4, Shead 2

At Eastport, Erika Brown scored two goals and Alicia Vose added a goal and two assists to carry the Dragons to victory.

Kaitlyn Leeman chipped in with a goal and an assist for the 9-3-1 winners and Lauren Troiani made 11 saves on 13 shots.

Laureta Ricker and Samantha Davis each scored a goal for 6-6-1 Shead and Skylar Richardson notched two assists. Roliza DeWitt made seven saves on 11 shots.

Narraguagus 6, DI-Stonington 1

At Harrington, Linny Barbee and Kim Beal each scored two goals to lead the Knights by the Mariners.

Missy Barbee scored a goal and had an assist and Jen Strout scored a goal for the 10-2 winners. Alicia Tenney stopped eight of nine shots.

Meghan Wiberg scored an unassisted goal and Christina Fifield made 29 saves on 34 shots 1-11 Deer Isle-Stonington.
