Witches roll over Trojans Caldwell, Emerson power 6-0 Brewer

BREWER – The Brewer Witches scored 35 points in the first half while the team’s “Black Hole” defense held the Mount Desert Island offense scoreless Friday night en route to a 35-6 victory at Doyle Field.

“Winning homecoming and staying undefeated is one of the best feelings ever,” said junior running back Court Rancourt. “Our offensive line did an excellent job and our defense was just incredible. The Black Hole did a great job.”

The “Black Hole,” a creation of Brewer head coach Josh Emmett, has allowed six points over the team’s last three games and had three interceptions and two fumble recoveries Friday night.

Brewer improved to 6-0 while MDI slipped to 1-5.

Brewer senior defensive back Seth Emerson’s fumble recovery during MDI’s first possession of the game paved the way for senior running back Josh Caldwell’s 72-yard touchdown run to give Brewer a 7-0 lead.

Caldwell led the Brewer offense with five carries for 83 yards while Emerson was second with nine carries for 58 yards.

Two consecutive four-and-out drives ending in punts for MDI translated into 14 more points for Brewer as the Witches’ offense used good field position to set up touchdown runs of 14 and 4 yards from Rancourt.

On the next Trojan possession, an interception by Brewer senior defensive back Spencer Dunbar gave the Witches the ball at the MDI 26-yard line. Two plays and a pass completion from Sean Collins to Nick Fox later and Brewer claimed a big 28-0 lead.

“While we were fired up, we weren’t focused and didn’t concentrate,” MDI head coach George McKay said. “Their speed caught us by surprise and with their size I don’t know who the hell is going to beat them.”

Rancourt finished off the scoring for Brewer with his own burst of speed with 9:09 remaining in the second quarter as he returned a punt 55 yards up the left sideline for a score.

The Trojans got onto the board in the fourth quarter with 1:01 remaining when a Brewer running back fumbled the ball at the Brewer 9-yard line and MDI sophomore defensive tackle Brandon Chase scooped up the loose ball and carried it into the end zone.

Sophomore quarterback Dale Beaudoin led the Trojan offense, completing 8 of 19 passing attempts for 118 yards. Senior wide receiver Donnie Mace had four receptions for 74 yards.

MDI’s backfield, banged up heading into Friday’s contest, left with more worries. Senior David Zabala halfback, already nursing a bruised hand, strained his knee in the third quarter and fullback John Lewis, who carried the ball 21 times for 47 yards, left with an injured elbow in the third quarter. Senior starting offensive guard David Muise also left the game with an elbow injury in the third quarter.

While the “Black Hole” did not allow any points, it did allow 101 yards rushing and 115 yards passing, and that, said Emmett, is something the team would like to improve upon.

“We need to continue to play better because the tests will get tougher and we need to continue to develop our depth and keep the intensity going,” the coach said. “A black hole is so tight, so dense that not even light can get through, we’re trying to build a defense so tight nothing gets through.”
