Carter debuts details of single-payer plan

PORTLAND – Green Independent Party gubernatorial candidate Jonathan Carter on Friday unveiled the details of his plan to provide universal health care to all Mainers.

His plan calls for creation of a health security board to determine whether it would be cheaper for Maine to create its own program or simply to put a “Family of Maine” group plan out to bid. Noting that 30 percent of Mainers do not have health insurance, he said the time is right for his proposal.

“No one should have to choose between paying his or her mortgage and going to the doctor,” Carter said.
