Goyette goal lifts UMF by Husson

BANGOR – Sam Goyette’s unassisted goal with 3:14 remaining in the second overtime lifted the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers to a 1-0 women’s soccer victory over the Husson College Braves Saturday

Alyson Pontbriand made four saves on eight shots for the 10-1 winners while Meg Taylor came up with nine saves on 21 shots for 5-7 Husson.

St. Joseph’s 2, UMPI 0

At Presque Isle Saturday, Kelly Cyr and Tiffany Merrill scored in the first half to give 5-7 St. Joseph’s the win.

Nicole McLaughlin and Casey Cook had the assists while Cheryl Northrop stopped four of five shots.

Noreen Marcino faced nine shots and stopped three for UM-Presque Isle.

USM 5, UMass-Boston 0

At Boston, freshman forwards Andrea Maillett and Devin Edwards each had a goal and an assist to help lead the 3-8-0 University of Southern Maine past UMass-Boston on Saturday.

Erin Garland scored with an assist from Amanda Valeriani while Molly Tanguay and Kelsey Shamano each had unassisted goals. Marcy Ansley stopped two of four shots for the Huskies.

Thomas 9, Wheelock 0

At Waterville, Amanda Martin scored a goal and had three assists while Mary Pratt had a two goals and two assists to help carry 3-6-1 Thomas past Wheelock College Saturday.

Bre Daggett and Moriah Harrill had two goals and two assists apiece for Thomas while Erica Gallant and Amy Young added goals. Shauna Lessard tallied an assist and Jessie Craft stopped two of six shots.

Amherst 3, Colby 1

At Amherst, Mass., first-half goals 4:20 apart by Tracy Montigny and Adrienne Showler erased a 1-0 deficit and sent the 2001 NCAA Division III runnersup past Colby.

Ashley Harmeling added an insurance goal in the second half.

Christine O’Donnell scored the game-opening goal for 4-6 Colby and Elizabeth Riley made six saves.

Maine 1, Sacred Heart 0

At Orono, freshman Heather Hathorn scored the game’s only goal with a shot from midfield at the 50:32 mark to give the Black Bears the win. Naomi Welsh made one save on six shots for 4-6-1 University of Maine.

Leslie Konsig stopped one of five shots for 6-4-1 Sacred Heart.

UM-Fort Kent 1, MMA 0

At Fort Kent, Saturday, Polly Pellitier scored in the third minute 3-7 UM-Fort Kent.

Jess Gagnon picked up the assist on the goal while Jamie Pellitier made seven saves for the Lady Bengals.

Megan Marshall made 10 saves, including a penalty kick stop, for 4-4-3 Maine Maritime.

St. Joseph’s 2, UM-Fort Kent 0

At Fort Kent Sunday, Tiffany Merrill scored with an assist from Casey Cook to help secure the lead and the win for 6-7 St. Joseph’s.

The Monks’ first goal was scored by Caroline Earls off a pass from Marissa Regan while Cheryl Nothrop made three saves..

Jaime Pelletier stopped nine shots for the 3-8 University of Maine at Fort Kent.

New Brunswick 2, UM-Machias 1

At Machias, Genevieve Whitbread scored the game-winning goal for New Brunswick on Saturday.

Christina Rich scored the game-tying goal with an assist from Shelley Hayden. Tricia Farrell stopped five of seven shots for 3-4-1 University of Maine Machias.

UM-Machias 7, Unity 0

At Machias Sunday, Erin O’Callahan scored two goals and also had an assist for the Clippers; Christina Rich scored two goals and Stefanie Hannan had a goal and three assists. Katie McWade contributed a goal and an assist; Sara Ricker scored, and Shelley Hayden had a pair of assists.

Tricia Farrell stopped both shots that she saw for 4-4-1 University of Maine Machias.

Lori Andreallsheashy made 14 saves on 24 shots for Unity.

Volleyball

Binghamton 3, Maine 1

At Orono, the Bearcats withstood a Black Bear rally in the fourth game to win the match 27-30, 30-16, 30-25, 30-27 Sunday.

Anne Crocus was 13-for-23 serving for 7-11 Binghamton and Jennifer Smith had 20 digs.

Claire Poliquin led Maine (6-14) with 17 kills on 32 attacks, eight digs, and two block assists. Leah Guidinger had 12 kills and a team-high 19 digs. Carmen Gabriel added 45 set assists, 10 digs, and seven kills.

Cross country

UMaine teams eighth, 13th

At Boston, the University of Maine men’s cross country team finished eighth of 46 teams, while the women were 13th of 42 teams at the New England Championships at Franklin Park.

Nolan Tobey was the highest finisher for the Black Bear men, taking 18th place in 24:49 over the 8K course. Vanessa Allen was the top finisher for the women, finishing the course 32nd overall (18:25) over a 5K course.

The University of Southern Maine men were 32nd, while Bates and Bowdoin came in 10th and 11th, respectively. The Bates and Bowdoin women were 24th and 25th, respectively.

Providence won the men’s meet with Brown second and Dartmouth third. Boston College took first in the women’s meet, followed by Williams and Brown.

At Farmington, Dorice Reitchel scored with 8:26 remaining for 8-4 University of Maine-Farmington. Fawn Albert made 10 saves.

Jamie Giles and Becca Fisher combined in net to make 13 saves for 5-4 Husson of Bangor.

UMaine splits weekend

At MIT’s Jack Barry Field in Cambridge, Mass., Maine came back to beat Cornell on Sunday 1-0 after it was knocked off by Boston University on Saturday 4-1.

Erin Burke-Webster, Celeste Hubbard, and Dalinda Banuelos scored 14:03 apart in the first half as Boston University built a 3-0 lead en route to snapping 19th-ranked Maine’s nine-game winning streak.

Whitney Peabody sewed up the win by scoring five minutes into the second half for 7-5 BU.

Amie Dubois scored for Maine and goalies Jaye Lance and Colbey Smith combined for seven saves.

On Sunday, Tara Bedard’s ninth goal of the season gave Maine the win. Skowhegan’s Bedard scored when she slipped a Karly Bundy pass behind Big Red goalkeeper Kaitlin Tierney 26:59 into the game.

Colbey Smith and Jaye Lance made five saves apiece on 21 Cornell shots to post the shutout for 10-2 Maine.

Tierney made four stops on nine shots for 7-5 Cornell.

Bowdoin 3, Southern Maine 2

At Keene, N.H., junior forward Tanya Strong scored all three of Bowdoin’s goals with assists from Annie Timson and Melissa Harnch-Smith.

Amy Carrol saved six of nine shots for the 7-2 Polar Bears.

Renee Heath scored both of the Huskies’ goals. Deedra Beveridge made the assist on the first goal and Heath scored the second goal unassisted. Jessie Superchi made four saves on 11 shots for 8-5 USM.

Men’s soccer

UM-Fort Kent 3, St. Joseph’s 0

At Fort Kent Sunday, three players scored to lead the 11-1 Bengals past the Monks.

Andrew Clavette, Ramiro Rodriguez, and Gintaras Lenkutis scored a goal apiece while Chad Bouchard and Nick Thibodeau combined to stop three shots.

Jeff Yaeger and Jeff Ruth combined to make six saves for 5-7-1 St. Joseph’s of Standish.

UM-Fort Kent 4, MMA 0

At Fort Kent Saturday, Andrew Clavette got the scoring started for the 10-1 Bengals with an assist from Ramiro Rodriguez.

Aadil Mootaseem added a goal while Josh Roy and Juan Murphy each had a goal and an assist. Chad Bouchard and Nick Thibodeau combined to make three saves.

Daniel Lobel stopped seven shots in net for 1-9 Maine Maritime Academy of Castine.

St. Joseph’s 3, UMPI 2

At Presque Isle Saturday, Michael Erickson scored what the game-winning goal for the Monks one minute into the second half.

Chris Willer assisted on the winner while Silas Ayers and Joe Valente added a goal apiece for the 4-8 Monks. Matt Grauwiler and Chris McVetty each had an assist while Jeff Yaeger stopped two of five shots.

Brad Holabird scored with an assist from Jamie Brewer for 3-9 UMPI. Matt Bouchard assisted on a Travis Frost goal and Tim Dolley made six saves on nine shots.

Hartford 2, Maine 1

At West Hartford, Conn., Saturday Alon Lubezky scored two goals to lead the 4-7 Hawks.

Guy Primer and Eital Arbel each had an assist, while Ryan Carr made six saves on 13 shots for Hartford.

Rob Dow scored Maine’s only goal. Josh Sjostrom faced 21 shots and stopped eight for the 1-8-2 Black Bears.

Amherst 3, Colby 1

At Amherst, Mass., Saturday, Jeff Cantwell had a goal and an assist to power 5-3-1 Amherst past Colby.

Brian Kelly scored for the 5-5 White Mules with an assist from Bobby Abendroth. Andrew Danzinger faced 15 shots and stopped seven.

UMass-Boston 1, USM 1 (OT)

At Gorham, Taylor Lance scored a goal 66:57 into the game to help the Huskies salvage a tie.

Ian Frank assisted on the tying goal. Chris Williard stopped three of four shots for 3-6-2 Southern Maine.

UM-Farmington 2, Husson 0

At Bangor, Dave Sithole scored an unassisted goal to secure the lead and the win for 6-3 UMaine-Farmington on Saturday.

Noah Peake made one save on three shots for the Beavers.

Matt Goodman faced 25 shots and stopped 19 for 4-6 Husson College.

UM-Machias 1, New Brunswick 0

At Machias Saturday, Mike Zeidler scored the game-winning goal for the Clippers with an assist from Mahmoud Sowe.

Courtenay Campbell blocked all four shots that he faced for 7-2-1 University of Maine Machias.

UMM 3, UMPI 1

At Machias Sunday, six players figured into the scoring as the Clippers earned the win.

Tatenda Chirusa, Matt Salyer and Pat Morgan each netted a goal while Mahmound Sowe, Mike Zeidler and Howart Gray added assists. Andy Swift made two saves on three shots for UMaine-Machias.

Brad Holabird put in a goal for UMaine-Presque Isle and Matt Watson stopped 16 of 22 shots.
