Pilot’s remains await identification today

AUGUSTA – The identification and cause of death for a pilot killed in a plane crash on Saddleback Mountain last weekend should come sometime this afternoon, officials with the state Medical Examiner’s Office said Monday.

“They had decided beforehand to do autopsies from the holiday weekend on Tuesday,” spokeswoman Cindy Elliott said. “And we’re still waiting for the dental records.”

The victim of the fatal plane crash north of Brownville is believed to be a man from Norridgewock, officials said.

The victim’s body was burned beyond recognition and authorities plan to use dental records to confirm his identity, Stephen McCausland of the Maine Public Safety Department said. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board and representatives from Cessna, the maker of the plane.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the four-seat, single-engine Cessna 182 went down Friday night on Saddleback Mountain near Brownville on its way from Caribou to Norridgewock. The plane is registered to Lex Transport of Keene, N.H.

The body was recovered on Sunday from a plateau near the summit, about 2,700 feet up the mountain, and taken to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta.
