WINTERPORT – The man who impaled himself on a metal fence post when he leapt into a garden while partying remained hospitalized Tuesday in serious condition.

A deputy said Tuesday it appears that Daniel Quillia, 20, of Winterport may have ingested “alcohol and other substances” before leaping from a porch into a darkened garden.

Quillia was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with part of the fence post protruding from his lower abdomen immediately after the incident.

The post was removed during surgery, and a hospital spokesman said Tuesday that Quillia’s condition remained serious.

The incident occurred at the Lebanon Road home of Hannah Reed shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday.

Quillia apparently had jumped from a porch into Reed’s flower garden and landed on a 4-foot-long fence post. The post punctured Quillia below the navel and impaled him. Rescue personnel had to cut the post so Quillia could fit into the ambulance.

According to the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department, authorities received a call from neighbors about a loud party at Reed’s home at 12:05 a.m. Sunday.

Deputy James Porter arrived at the house 20 minutes later and advised Reed to tone it down or that she could face charges for disorderly conduct.

At 1:16 a.m., the communications center received a 911 call from the home about Quillia’s injury, and Porter and Deputy David Bishop arrived three minutes later.
