MDI man charged after chase, crash Car stolen at College of the Atlantic hits truck during Bangor pursuit

A Mount Desert Island man was charged after a brief chase involving Bangor and Brewer police and a car reported stolen in Bar Harbor.

The gray 1994 Honda Accord driven by Michael Acosta, 20, of Otter Creek on MDI wound up in a wreck Saturday night involving a U-Haul rental truck, police said.

Brewer police Cpl. Jason Moffitt said he noticed a Honda with a burned-out headlight on Wilson Street just after 11 p.m. Saturday, and he tried to pull it over.

The car failed to stop and sped around another vehicle heading north on Wilson, Moffitt said.

The Accord ran a red light at the intersection of Wilson and North Main streets in Brewer, then headed across the Penobscot Bridge into Bangor, where the driver ran a blinking red light at Broadway and State Street. It then slammed into the driver’s side of a U-Haul truck headed down State Street.

With Bangor police officers nearby, a man later identified as Acosta fled the Honda on foot, running to a nearby parking lot across Broadway and down State Street, said Bangor police Officer Chad Foley.

Police caught up to Acosta at Exchange Street, where he threw a pair of work gloves to the ground and surrendered to police.

Four other people ranging in age from late teens to early 20s from the Ellsworth and Bar Harbor areas remained in the Honda, Moffitt said.

Acosta was charged with failure to stop for a police officer, driving to endanger, operating a vehicle after the suspension of his license, and unauthorized use of property. The four passengers were not charged.

The Honda had been reported stolen sometime between 2 and 10:30 p.m. Saturday from the Davis Center parking lot on the campus of College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, said Lt. Jim Pinkham of the Bar Harbor Police Department. The 21-year-old owner said he had left the car locked.

The car was a total loss, and damage to the U-Haul was estimated at $2,000, said Sgt. Larry Weber of Bangor police. The driver of the U-Haul was uninjured.
