Cut for the Cure

BANGOR – The fourth annual Cut for the Cure, a benefit for breast cancer, will be held 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct 27, at Center Court in the Bangor Mall.

Attitudes Hair Salon is the honorary chairman for the event.

Participating will be: Attitudes, Bangor; Jamie Nails at Attitudes, Bonnie & Clyde, Brewer; Hair and Company, Brewer; Defining Designs, Brewer; Hair Hut, Milford; and Master Cuts of Bangor Mall. Haircuts will cost $10; manicure, $10; cut and manicure, $17.

Proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s Maine affiliate. For information, call 262-7233.

AED training

BANGOR – Automatic external defibrillator training, which teaches integration of CPR skills with the appropriate use of the AED, and the proper use of bag valve masks and other barrier devices, is available at Eastern Maine Medical Center or at places of business. The four-hour program costs $30 per person.

Speech-language pathologist

BANGOR – Speech pathologist Lisa Hosfeld has joined the Warren Center for Communication and Learning.

Hosfeld holds a master’s degree in communication disorders from for Arizona State University. She has professional experience working with adults in hospitals and nursing facilities, and with children.

Health screening

BANGOR – Cholesterol and blood pressure screening will be held 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the YMCA, 128 Hammond St. The fee is $10. For an appointment, call 973-7088.

Speech, hearing association

BANGOR – Mary E. Poulin, administrative director of the Warren Center for Communication and Learning, has been re-elected treasurer of the National Association of Speech and Hearing Centers. Poulin was elected for a second three-year term at the association’s fall meeting in Williamsburg, Va.

Poulin is the first Mainer to serve in a leadership position in the association. She is a graduate of the University of Maine and lives in Hampden.

The National Association of Speech and Hearing Centers is a network of directors of free-standing, not-for-profit speech and hearing centers in the continental United States.

The Warren Center is northern Maine’s largest not-for-profit speech and hearing center located at 175 Union St.

The Warren Center offers a full range of services in audiology, including hearing evaluations, hearing aid sales and service, and diagnosis and treatment of impairments. The center also offers diagnosis and treatment of speech and language disorders, including memory disorders, swallowing, fluency, articulation, voice disturbances and programming of choclear implants.

Mental health issues march

AUGUSTA – NAMI Maine, people with mental illness and their families, law enforcement officials, mental health providers, educators and others will gather to demonstrate the need for accessibility and quality in mental health services, and to speak out against pending cuts of nearly $9 million to mental health services in Maine.

The gathering will take place 10 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Oct. 26, at Capitol Park in Augusta.

NAMI Maine provides support, education and advocacy on behalf of people with mental illness, and their families.
