PORTLAND – The Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox will be getting its own version of Fenway Park’s famed Green Monster.
Construction is set to begin Monday on a likeness of Fenway’s left field wall at Hadlock Field, home to the Portland Sea Dogs. The job should be completed sometime before Christmas, said spokesman Chris Cameron.
The Sea Dogs recently ended their affiliation with the Florida Marlins and signed a two-year agreement with the Red Sox. Sea Dog fans were pleased since the Red Sox already command the loyalty of most Mainers.
The Green Monster idea was hatched by Sea Dogs owner Dan Burke and quickly embraced by Charlie Eshbach, president and general manager.
“The fans have been very excited about the idea,” Cameron said. “The response has pretty much been a standing ovation.”
Like Fenway, Hadlock has a relatively short distance down the left field line. Fenway’s is 310 feet, Hadlock’s 315 feet.
The Green Monster that’s being erected in Portland will be the same height as the real one at Fenway Park: 37 feet.
