Seniors Jesse Carlton of Chatham, Mass., and Joe Drapeau of Biddeford have been named the 2003 team captains of the University of Maine baseball team, according to coach Paul Kostacopoulos.
The captains are selected by a team vote.
Carlton is a two-time team captain, serving as co-captain in 2002 with former Black Bear Mike Ross. Carlton started 34 games last season, hitting .282 with five home runs and four doubles.
Defensively, Carlton had 213 putouts and 85 assists in the infield.
“Jesse really encompasses everything you want in a captain. He is a good person and a good leader and is very respected by his teammates,” Kostacopoulos said.
Drapeau, one of the top power hitters in the America East, was a key figure for the 2002 Black Bear squad that won the America East championship. Drapeau was named to the second team all-America East after belting a league-leading 11 home runs and 61 RBIs.
Drapeau led almost every offensive statistical category, leading with 73 hits and 124 total bases as well. Drapeau, the only UMaine player to start and play in all 57 games, hit .341 last season in 214 at-bats, and had 86 putouts and 62 assists at catcher and third-base.
“Joe’s on-the-field presence, coupled with his competitiveness will make him an outstanding captain,” Kostacopoulos said.
Bus system set at UMaine
Due to the number of activities on the University of Maine campus during homecoming weekend, a bus system has been set up to assist with transporting visitors on Saturday.
The first bus will start at 6:30 a.m. and run until 7 p.m. A second bus will start its route at 11 a.m. and continue through the end of the hockey game.
The bus route will begin in front of Memorial Gym (the normal bus stop facing the Black Bear and mall area). From there the bus will head up Long Road, turn on Flagstaff, then pick up or drop off bus riders at the Maine Center for the Arts.
After the MCA, the bus continues along Sebago Road to Munson Road and then stops at the Buchanan Alumni House. After the pickup/dropoff at Buchanan, the bus returns to MCA, then the Gym, and repeats the route throughout the day.
There will not be a pickup at the steam-plant lot because 60 percent of this lot is used by campus residents.
