Droog lifts UMaine women to opening win

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Karen Droog scored two goals to help the UMaine women’s hockey team open with 4-1 victory over the Vermont Catamounts Friday night.

Maine’s Laura Maddin started the scoring at 4:15 in the first period on a pass from Meagan Aarts. Droog upped the score to 2-0 at 10:31 in the second period as she converted assists from Aarts and Raffi Wolf for a power-play goal.

Vermont’s Lindsey Tilbury pulled the Catamounts to within one at 15:07 of the second on the power play.

Seventeen seconds later, Droog netted her second goal of the game on a Jarin Sjogren assist. Naomi Smethurst added an insurance goal in the third period. Dawn Froats made eight saves on nine shots for Maine and Tiffany Hayes had 38 saves for 1-4 Vermont.

Volleyball

Hartford 3, Maine 2

At West Hartford, Conn., the Hawks were outhit and outblocked, but still managed to edge the Black Bears 30-25, 35-33, 21-30, 21-30, 15-13.

Danielle Scoggin led Hartford (13-10) with 19 digs and 49 set assists. Stephanie Volkers had 23 kills.

Carmen Gabriel paced Maine (6-17) with 15 kills on 25 attacks and had 47 assists, seven digs and five aces. Kaili Jordan had 17 kills. The Bears had 66 kills to the Hawks’ 62.

Field hockey

Husson 2, Thomas 0

At Waterville, Nicole Palmer’s first-half goal led Husson College to victory.

The Braves of Bangor outshot the Terriers of Waterville, 24-5. Jen Lane had 22 saves for 3-7 Thomas and Jaime Giles had five saves for 8-5 Husson.

Maine 6, Albany 2

At Albany, N.Y., led by a pair of goals and an assist from Rachael Hilgar, and five second-half team goals, Maine improved to 13-2.

Maine’s Jen Johnstone opened the scoring at 23:43 on a goal off a penalty corner from Rachael Hilgar for a 1-0 lead that Maine took into halftime.

Albany, now 5-10, tied the game at 21:16 of the second half on a goal from Tina Bryson. Hilgar scored her sixth goal of the season at 19:22 off a scramble in front of the goal cage as Maine reclaimed the lead.

Women’s soccer

UM-Farmington 4, St. Joseph’s

At Farmington, Megan Woodcock scored a pair of goals to lead the Beavers past Monks.

Shannon Mailhot and Richelle Dube also scored for the University of Maine- Farmington in the win. All four goals were scored in the first half. Sam Goyette, Jodi Dodge and Woodcock each added an assist.

Alyson Pontbriand had five saves earned her ninth shutout of the year for the 13-1-1 Beavers. Shana Howard had 15 saves for 6-10 St. Joseph’s College of Standish.
