ALFRED – A Presque Isle man was returned to the York County Jail without bail Monday after pleading innocent to last summer’s slaying of a Canadian tourist in Old Orchard Beach.
Benjamin Humphrey, 29, is charged with murder in the killing of Derek Rogers, 47, of Russell, Ontario, who was beaten to death during a random encounter while he was out for a stroll on the beach early July 31.
The body of Rogers, a band member in the Canadian Armed Forces, was discovered soon afterward in the town’s Ocean Park area.
After a five-day manhunt, Humphrey was arrested in Rapid City, S.D., and returned to Maine in early September.
His arraignment in York County Superior Court followed a grand jury indictment. He also faces unrelated charges of burglary, terrorizing, criminal mischief and criminal threatening in Aroostook County.
Humphrey’s girlfriend, Aimee Pelletier, 23, is accused of helping Humphrey flee the state and avoid arrest after the killing. Pelletier faces charges of hindering apprehension, theft and assault.
