Kissell goal puts Penquis in final Nason makes 15 saves in upset

GUILFORD – A first-half goal by Steve Kissell and a shutout effort by goalie Kevin Nason helped the No. 5 Penquis Patriots upset the No. 1 Piscataquis Community Pirates 1-0 in an Eastern Maine Class C boys soccer semifinal Tuesday.

The Patriots advanced to Saturday’s regional championship where they will travel to Blue Hill to take on the third-seeded George Stevens Academy Eagles.

GSA shut out No. 7 Schenck of East Millinocket 1-0 to advance.

Kissell ran on to a cross from Justin Allen and scored from about 12 yards about. Nason finished with 15 saves on 21 shots with two of those shots hitting the goal’s crossbar.

It was Penquis’ first win over Piscataquis Community this season as PCHS shut out Penquis 1-0 in Guilford and rolled to a 6-2 win in Milo.

Penquis is now 9-5-2 and PCHS finished at 10-1-5. Josh Luellen made seven saves on 11 shots for the Pirates.
