I was sitting home watching the debate for governor on Oct. 16 and found myself reacting to the comment from independent candidate John Michael. I was appalled to know there was a man who could possibly be the next governor who seems to be so racist and narrow-minded.
Michael did acknowledge our fight for clean water and our sustenance right to utilize plants and animals for consumption, but then ruined it by stating that if he became governor he would support this because it would help the native people become “men once again.” The last time I knew I was and always will be a proud Penobscot man. I have, and always will, work to better the lifestyle of my people and to cooperate with the people of Maine so we can all enjoy what we have come to love.
On the casino issue, it has been no secret where the candidates stand on this, but Michael’s statement that he was “offended and against the idea of a casino because it was geared toward one race of people, the Native Americans of Maine … more than the actual idea of a casino itself,” is racist. The casino would not only benefit the Native Americans of Maine, it would bring great economic relief to the state as a whole.
Let us all think who the candidate will be who will respect the lifestyle and ideas of not only the native people of Maine but of all the people of Maine. Let us seek a candidate who will work for economic relief for us all.
