Casinos and smoking

“Casino opposition greatest in wealthy communities” is your header for an excellent Associated Press report in the Oct 28 issue of the Bangor Daily News. The conclusion is certainly correct but another slant would be of greater interest.

Because wealth follows the degree of education we might also state: “Casino opposition greatest among the educated.” When it comes to the smoking problem we prefer to ascribe the reduced smoking among the wealthy to their educational level. High schools teach almost nothing about economics and little on health, which makes the further educated reader more likely to learn about the negative results of casinos and smoking.
