Every year, the nonprofit League of Conservation Voters ranks state and federal lawmakers’ environmental records by tallying how they voted on key environmental issues.

U.S. Rep. John Baldacci has been all over the map, with a low of 0 percent as a state senator in 1993-94 and a high of 100 percent for his performance as Maine’s 2nd District representative in 1998. An average of Baldacci’s rankings during the past decade comes out to about 66 percent.

Peter Cianchette earned a 25 percent ranking in 2000, during his second term as South Portland’s representative to the Legislature, and a 0 percent ranking during his first term in 1998, for an average of 12.5 percent.

John Michael received an 18 percent ranking for last year, the lowest the independent state representative from Auburn has received. In 1992, he received a career-high 100 percent rating. Michael’s average during the past decade was 66 percent.

Jonathan Carter has never held political office and thus has never been ranked.

Baldacci has earned the endorsement of Maine’s Sierra Club chapter, while Cianchette has the official support of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, the Maine Snowmobile Association and the National Rifle Association.
