Maine upsets Wildcats 1-0

ORONO – Freshman Heather Hathorn of Scarborough scored 16 minutes into the game off a pass from junior Annie Hamel and freshman Erin Corey of Winslow to help the University of Maine Black Bears upset the New Hampshire Wildcats 1-0 in an America East women’s soccer game Thursday.

The Wildcats, who dropped to 9-6-1 and 4-2-1 in America East, were leading the conference by one game heading into Thursday’s game. UMaine finished the regular season at 7-8-1 overall and 3-4-1 in America East.

The Bears are in sixth place in the league, which sends four to its playoffs.

The Bears outshot the Wildcats 11-6 with Hathorn leading with six. Maine goalie Naomi Welch had four saves in her seventh shutout. She finishes her career with 17 shutouts, the most of any women’s goalie at the school.

Kristen Ouellette countered with four saves on 11 shots for the Wildcats.

Eastern Conn. 2, So. Maine 1

At Gorham, Jenn Orme scored the decisive goal in the 87th minute as the Warriors edged the Huskies.

Orme also had an assist on a goal by Jen Ferrari for 13-2 Eastern Connecticut. Stacey Scholfield made two saves on six shots.

Amanda Valeriani scored off a pass from Jamyn Mooney for 4-11 Southern Maine. Marcy Ansley stopped five out of 13 shots.

Men’s soccer

UM-Farmington 2, St. Joseph’s 1

At Farmington, Pat Dugas and Justin Genschel notched a goal each to lead the 10-4-1 Beavers.

Jeff Beck and Shuji Fukami had an assist each for the winners. Ryan Hersey made two saves on four shots.

Cameron Evanglisti tallied a goal for the 7-10-1 Monks of Standish. Jeff Yaeger stopped seven out of 21 shots.
