Cowan sparks Orono; Minutemen stop Lynx

ORONO – Lance Cowan set two school season records to lead the Orono Red Riots to a 21-6 high school football victory over the John Bapst Crusaders Friday night.

Cowan caught three passes for 59 yards to set marks in both categories. He finished the regular season with 39 catches and 564 yards, breaking the records of 38 and 545 set by Jamie Poulin in 1994.

Cowan opened the scoring with a 5-yard run in the first quarter and had seven rushes for 49 yards on the night.

Jeff Miller scored on a 5-yard pass from Jason Coleman, and Ryan Levesque closed out the Red Riot scoring with a 5-yard run. Miller kicked all three extra points.

Coleman completed 7 of 12 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown. Nick Lagrande led the defensive side with 12 tackles, and Levesque had 11 before leaving the game after being injured while punting at the start of the fourth quarter.

Pat Healey ran 48 yards for Bapst’s score in the fourth quarter. He finished with 60 yards on nine carries.

Foxcroft 40, Dexter 0

At Dover-Foxcroft, the Ponies turned in another balanced offensive effort and a stifling defensive performance to finish the regular season at 9-0.

Quarterback Josh Withee connected on an 8-yard touchdown pass to Danny White and also scored on a 1-yard run. Withee completed 6 of 14 passes for 143 yards.

White also scored on a 1-yard run and kicked two extra points. He finished with 76 yards on eight carries.

Josh Sands added to the Foxcroft scoring with a 1-yard TD run and E.J. Imbert had a 2-yard TD run.

Bobby Gilbert contributed to the offense with 42 yards on five carries, including the game’s first TD on a 21-yard run. He was filling in for an injured Lincoln Robinson (ankle).

The Ponies held the Tigers to 23 yards of total offense.

Adam Russell intercepted two passes for Dexter and Aaron Vafiades recorded 11 tackles.

Stearns 12, Mattanawcook 6

At Millinocket, in a game decided by big defensive plays, the Minutemen edged the Lynx with an interception and a fumble recovery for a pair of touchdowns.

Defensive tackle Nate Franck scored what would be the game- winning touchdown in the fourth quarter of the regular- season finale when he picked up the loose ball and carried it 25 yards for the final score of the game.

Stearns got onto the board early in the first quarter when cornerback Matt Leino picked off a Mattanawcook pass and returned it 85 yards for a score. With the Minutemen punting from their own end zone, the Lynx of Lincoln responded in the third quarter when defensive end Tyler Libby blocked the punt and recovered it for a score.

Stearns (5-4) finished with 185 total yards and Mattanawcook (6-3) had 183 total yards.

MDI 36, Old Town 13

At Mount Desert, Donnie Mace and Dale Beaudoin exploited a connection that they had developed over the season to the tune of five completions for 85 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion.

With completions of 19 and 15 yards, respectively, and a two-point conversion pass, Mace and Beaudoin gave the Trojans a 14-0 lead. Zach Carney upped the Mount Desert Island lead to 16-0 with a safety before the Indians responded with a 30-yard passing touchdown from Jared Goody to Jason Adams.

MDI added a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown by Mace and a 2-yard dive into the end zone by John Lewis before Old Town notched its last score of the season on a 20-yard pass from Goody to Jason Adams. The extra point on the Indians’ touchdown was blocked by Carney. Carney finished with 10 tackles, a safety and a blocked kick.

David Zabala finished off the night’s scoring with a 2-yard scoring run. Lewis carried the ball 20 times for 124 yards for the 2-7 Trojans. Beaudoin completed 6 of 20 passes for 105 yards. Mace also added a defensive interception. Zabalaq had eight tackles, including three sacks.

Goody led 0-9 Old Town by completing 9 of 23 passes for 118 yards. Brad Goody led the Indian defense with 14 tackles. Brandon Eastman added 11 tackles.

At Pittsfield, the visiting Golden Bucks cemented an LTC Class C playoff berth and spread the ball around offensively to finish the regular season with a shutout.

Chris Woodman led the 6-3 Bucks’ run game with 62 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries while Phil Harvey had a TD and 39 yards on nine carries. Quarterback Dow Cain completed nine of 15 passes for 123 yards.

Quarterback Tyson Quint led the Maine Central Institute Huskies’ offensive with 36 yards on 12 carries and another 32 yards on 3-for-8 passing.

Boothbay 45, Rockland 8

At Rockland, despite the efforts of senior runningback Mike Curtis, the Tigers dropped their final game of the season.

Curtis finished his high school career with 1,490 yards, 18 touchdowns, 132 points on a night when he carried the ball 28 times for 160 yards, while leading his defense with 12 tackles.

Alex Rand led undefeated Boothbay (9-0) with 11 carries for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Rand got the Seahawks onto the board first with a 5-yard run and increased the lead to 8-0 after running for the two-point conversion. Rockland tied the game at 8-8 with a 4-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion run by Curtis.

Boothbay went on to score five unanswered touchdowns in the first half before both teams battled through a scoreless second half. Rand had an 8-yard scoring run, Mark Arsenault a 31-yard touchdown, Mike Norton a 41-yard pass from Will Carroll, Jake Hodgdon had a 4- yard run and John Farrin scored from the 5.

Arsneault finished with 77 yards on four carries and Wood had three carries for 50 yards. Farrin led the Boothbay defense with an interception.
