A fire gutted the home of Rhoda Welcome on Monday, Oct. 28, leaving the Guilford woman and her four children, ranging in age from 6 to 21, homeless.
Family friend Lois Simpson reports that an account has been established to help the family, which lost everything in the fire.
Donations to the Rhonda Welcome Fire Fund can be made at KeyBank in Guilford.
Simpson said that “clothing and other items” for the family may be left at the home of Welcome’s neighbor, Debbie Bravi, on the North Guilford Road.
Simpson also said that many community members are generously extending offers of assistance to Welcome, who hopes to rebuild her home in the spring.
Anyone who wants more information on how to help the family can call Bravi at 876-2635.
Folks from near and far with any connection to the town of Hermon won’t want to miss “An Evening of Hermon History and Humor,” featuring one of Maine’s favorite storytellers, Tim Sample, beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Hermon High School auditorium on Route 2.
The event will help the Hermon Recreation Department and the Hermon Historical Society celebrate the 150th anniversary of Hermon’s One-Room Schoolhouse No. 5.
All proceeds benefit recreation programs for the young people of Hermon.
Doors open at 5 p.m. for the 6 p.m. show, which begins with a brief look at the history of Hermon and its one-room schoolhouse as seen through the eyes of members of the HHS. Sample follows with a 90-minute performance.
Sponsored by Dysart’s Truck Stop-Restaurant in Hermon, general admission advance tickets are $10, or $12.50 at the door.
A limited number of Dysart’s VIP Tickets are also available for $50 each.
Those tickets include a front-row seat, a Hermon Recreation Department T-shirt, and dinner with Sample after the show as he and 20 guests enjoy a New England-style dinner at Dysart’s, said to be one of Sample’s favorite Maine restaurants.
Tickets can be obtained at the Hermon Town Office or by calling the Hermon Recreation Department office at 848-5772.
The All Saints Catholic School annual “Scholarship Super Supper” has turned out to be a very popular event – tickets are limited and apt to sell out quickly.
In fact, reports All Saints School Board chairwoman Mary Sullivan, of the 100 tickets available, only 20 remain.
The event starts at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at the Bangor Banquet and Convention Center on Hogan Road. Tickets are $250 for two people, which makes buyers eligible for all prizes.
The event’s popularity is due, in part, to the delightful hosting capabilities of WLBZ television anchorman Ric Tyler, but also to the fact that every fourth ticket drawn results in a prize ranging from motel stays, brunches and heating oil to tickets for University of Maine games.
But the best is saved for the last, and the person who holds the 99th ticket drawn wins two airline tickets to any destination in the United States; the 100th ticket holder wins the grand prize of $10,000.
Last year, much to everyone’s surprise and delight, that ticket holder just happened to be Sister Mary Norberta, president and CEO of St. Joseph Healthcare, who graciously accepted the award on behalf of that institution for its new cardiac laboratory unity.
To obtain the last of those “super” tickets, call Sullivan at 947-4112.
