WESTBROOK – Residents voted Tuesday to uphold a gay rights ordinance that was passed by the City Council last summer and brought to a citywide vote by opponents who collected signatures to force a referendum.

Westbrook’s ordinance bans discrimination in housing, employment, credit, and access to public accommodations based on a person’s sexual orientation. It is one of 12 Maine communities with a gay rights ordinance.
