ORONO – The Women in the Curriculum and Women’s Studies Program announced the recipients of the Maryann Hartman Award on Thursday at UM.

This year’s honorees are Elizabeth (Libby) Mitchell, Valerie Osborne and Jean Symonds. Mitchell was chosen for her political leadership in the Maine Legislature and beyond; Osborne for innovative library work and her advocacy for girls; and Symonds for her wide-ranging leadership in areas from women’s health to the Maine lobstering community.

As part of a new tradition, the program also honored one student with the Young Women’s Social Justice Award. This year’s student recipient is Alicia McConkey, a 2002 graduate of Oxford Hills High School.
