One of the longest running and most popular craft shows in the area is upon us.

The 23rd annual Zonta Holiday Marketplace is 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, and Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Brewer Auditorium.

Your 50-cent admission benefits the many scholarships Zonta awards annually.

Show chairwoman Bonnie Haghkerdar of Bangor has brought together returning and new craftspeople who will display and sell their wares. Some will be creating their work on the premises, while others will take orders for creations of your choice.

At the bazaar, you will find wreath making, slate painting, woodworking and handmade sweaters, scarves, polar fleece and jewelry.

Eastern Maine AIDS Network will be selling raffle tickets for a Christmas tree, valued at nearly $3,000, that features designer ornaments.

Diane Rowell of Hampden is president of Zonta, a worldwide service organization of professionals working to advance the status of women.

Coordinator Irene Hall and members of the Orono Library Friends invite you to the Orono Public Library Used Book and Bake Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the library on Goodridge Drive.

The event is free but, if you wish to be an “early bird” and arrive at 8:30 a.m., it will cost you $5.

Hall reminds you that bargain-price shopping on books begins at 2 p.m.

Alice Smith and Carol Mower, overseeing the food sale, will have a delightful assortment of baked and cooked foods including breads, rolls and desserts, and Sandra Hutchinson will introduce you to “Orono Writes,” a gathering of local writers who will read from their works beginning at 10 a.m.

Proceeds from the sale benefit library programs and the Friends’ support of the Orono Public Library Foundation’s plans for a new facility.

St. John’s Catholic Church of Bangor will hold its annual Holiday Fair from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, in the Parish Hall on York Street.

At the fair, you will find white elephant items, crafts, baked goods, fudge, items that have been knitted, sewn or crocheted, and you can bid in a silent auction.

While you are shopping, Women’s Council secretary Rachel Ferguson said you will also be able to purchase a hot lunch.

Gocco, which means “child’s play” in Japanese and is a term used to describe little works of art, will be demonstrated by Liliane Kell and grandson, Ethan Kell, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, in the Riverview Room of the Ellsworth Public Library, 20 State St.

An event for all ages, you will not only learn how the process begins, but you also will be able to print some winter theme cards to take home.

All proceeds from a dinner-dance sponsored by the Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge Veterans Remembrance Committee will benefit the VA Medical and Regional Office Center in Togus.

The event begins with a roast pork dinner served from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by a dance with disc jockey Dan Graf, from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at the lodge at 21 Silver St. in Skowhegan.

The fund-raiser is open to Elks members and invited guests, and the donation is $10 per person or $15 per couple. For tickets or information, call the lodge at 474-3311.

Cole Land Transportation Museum has invited pupils from several area schools to be its guests at the Penobscot Theatre Company-Maine Shakespeare Festival’s final dress rehearsal of “The Diary of Anne Frank,” which is running this month at the Bangor Opera House, 131 Main St.

Museum operations manager Mark Burnett said that due to school scheduling conflicts, the museum has 50 tickets remaining and will gladly give them to veterans who want to see the show, which is the centerpiece of PTC-MSF’s community outreach program, “Beyond Tolerance: Steps to Acceptance, Compassion, Respect and Understanding.”

“We don’t want to have any empty seats in the house,” Burnett said.

“Our guests need to be seated by 6:50 p.m. for the 7 p.m. dress rehearsal on Monday, Nov. 11, at the theatre.” Any veteran, who wants to see this play, free, should call the museum at 990-3600, and their tickets will be waiting for them at the window, Burnett said.

A lobster roll and fish chowder supper will be served on a first-come, first-served basis from 4 to 7:30 p.m. today at the East Orrington Congregational Church, 38 Johnson Mill Road in Orrington.

The supper is part of the church’s two-day “Candy Land Christmas Fair,” which begins at 4 p.m. today and continues from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the church.

Mona Spain also reports that a flu clinic will be held at the church from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9. For more information about the fair, the food or the flu clinic, call Spain at 825-4957.
