I am responding to the Brewer citizen [Mary Lou Dixon] who proudly described the development that is taking place in his city (“Look at Brewer now,” BDN letter, Oct. 16). As a Bangor citizen, I commend Brewer for its growth. I enjoy patronizing many of its businesses.
I, too, am proud, and glad, that there are checks and balances in place in Bangor that have allowed our community to take a slow and careful look at some of the potential dangers of overdevelopment, as in the proposal of having a Wal-Mart Supercenter too close to the Penjajawoc Marsh, a precious and invaluable natural resource.
One Wal-Mart superstore in this area will be more than enough. It may as well be located in Brewer considering the irreparable damage it could inflict upon one of the largest and best freshwater wetlands in the state.
