BREWER – A Bangor man was arrested and charged with terrorizing in connection with a bomb threat made by telephone to the home of his former girlfriend.
After his arrest, Allen Johnson, 49, was taken to Penobscot County Jail, and later was released on bail, Cpl. Roger Hershey of the Brewer Police Department said Friday.
According to Hershey, the incident began at 5:50 p.m. Thursday, when Johnson’s former girlfriend called Brewer police to report that Johnson had called her and said he had left her a “surprise” in her automobile, the surprise being a bomb rigged to explode when she turned the key in the car’s ignition. The woman’s automobile was parked outside her residence at the time, he said.
Brewer police blocked off a two-block section of Rinfret Drive and asked residents of nearby homes to remain inside. The Brewer Fire Department was called to the area and put on standby.
The Bangor Police Department’s Explosives Ordinance Disposal Team, which also was called to the scene, examined the vehicle and deemed it bomb-free, Hershey said.
Johnson and his ex-girlfriend had recently parted ways and Johnson apparently was taking the breakup badly, Hershey said.
Johnson, who denied involvement in the incident, was implicated as the result of a telephone number recorded on the victim’s caller ID, Hershey said.
The number was traced to a pay phone at a convenience store at the corner of Hammond and Ohio streets in Bangor, he said. When Bangor police officers arrived at the store, they found Johnson still on the premises.
