EL upsets Skowhegan; Devils stop Waterville

SKOWHEGAN – Matt Bennett threw first-half touchdown passes of 60, 64 and 17 yards Friday night to spark the fifth-seeded Red Eddies of Auburn into the Pine Tree Conference title game with a 20-14 upset victory over previously unbeaten and top-seeded Skowhegan at Reggie Clark Field.

Bennett hooked up with Will Claxton for a 60-yard TD on Edward Little’s second play from scrimmage, then completed a 64-yarder to Brian Taylor on the second play of the Eddies’ second series.

Bennett and Taylor combined for the clincher, a 17-yarder, late in the second quarter, then hooked up on the conversion pass.

Derek Holt put Skowhegan on the board with an 86-yard kickoff return for a score after EL’s second TD. However, the Indians could muster only a Josh Meyer 3-yard scoring run the rest of the way.

Lewiston 26, Waterville 0

At Lewiston, Jeremy Madore rushed for three touchdowns to lead the sixth-seeded Blue Devils into the Pine Tree Conference championship game.

Madore gave Lewiston the only points it would need with a 4-yard run in the second quarter, but added a 3-yard TD in the third and a 35-yard jaunt in the fourth.

Kirk Bolduc returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Waterville was the No. 7 seed.
