NEWFIELD – Hazardous materials teams were called to an elementary school Friday after a suspicious odor was reported.
Rescue crews and hazmat professionals were dispatched when pupils at Line Elementary School reported smelling fumes after maintenance workers tried to clear a clogged drain with a chemical.
The 420 pupils were ordered out of the school after some complained.
The students were checked out by emergency workers before boarding buses and going home, said Mary Ann Vitalone from the SAD 57 office. She was not aware of any children becoming ill from the fumes.
