SUV strikes teen in crosswalk Eddington youth expected to be released from hospital late Friday

A 15-year-old Eddington youth was struck by a sports utility vehicle as he ran across a crosswalk in Brewer Friday evening.

Brewer police officials weren’t releasing the name of the boy as the incident is still under investigation, but said that despite what they initially thought might be a fatal accident, the youth was expected to be released from the hospital late Friday with a concussion but no broken bones.

Brewer police Cpl. Jason Moffitt said the youth was one of several young people who crossed Wilson Street by the Acme Road about 6:20 p.m., although only the 15-year-old was struck. Motorist Tina Oxley, 29, of Hermon was heading toward Bangor on Wilson Street and had the green light at the intersection when her Ford Explorer struck the youth. Oxley said she didn’t see the youths crossing the street as her view was obstructed by a large pickup truck that had stopped to turn left onto the Acme Road.

She only saw the youths when they were right in front of her, although she started to brake when she saw the first youth.

The accident occurred before the start of a Brewer High School football game nearby.

Moffitt said neither alcohol nor speed were considered factors in the accident. The incident is being reconstructed by Bangor police Officer Steve Jordan.

Wardens joined local residents in searching a small wooded area by the end of outer Ohio Street in Glenburn Friday after shots were heard coming from in the woods.

Nearby residents first entered the woods, some on ATVs, after hearing two shots fired followed a short time later by three more shots. They also spotted an unfamiliar sports utility vehicle parked unattended nearby, reported Sgt. Doug Tibbetts of the Maine State Warden Service. The SUV turned out to belong to a Bar Harbor man who had left his disabled vehicle there and returned home, said Sgt. Troy Morton of the Penobscot County Sheriff ‘s Department.

Wardens searched the woods that covered an area about a half-mile square bounded on two sides by Ohio Street and Route 15 and homes on the other two sides.

During the search, more shots were fired and shouting was heard, although it turned out to be the local residents who had made a foray into the woods, Tibbetts said. After searching for about an hour, including a snowmobile trail, Tibbetts said searchers concluded that no one was in the woods, although the origin of the initial shots remained a mystery.
