BOSTON – University of Maine senior wing and first-team All-America East selection Tara Bedard of Skowhegan said she had never been on a field hockey team that overcame a 3-0 deficit.
She has now.
Sophomore Amie Dubois of Winslow scored a pair of second-half goals, including the tying goal with 35 seconds left; Jay junior forward Jana Ouellette had another and Rachael Hilgar’s scored the game-winner with 2:23 left in overtime as the Black Bears stunned New Hampshire 4-3 in their America East semifinal at Sweeney Field Friday.
The third-seeded Black Bears, 15-3, play in their first-ever America East championship game Sunday at 2 p.m. against top seed and defending champ Northeastern.
Northeastern, 16-4, eliminated Vermont 5-0.
UNH had used first-half goals by Courtney Goodwin and Katie White and a Jenn Harrison goal 32 seconds into the second half to build its lead.
Ouellette made it 3-1 with 29:47 left and Dubois scored the first of her two goals 5:22 later.
“Once we scored that first goal, we knew we could keep scoring and come back,” said Bedard, who had three assists.
Maine coach Terry Kix termed the win “remarkable.
“Amie’s first goal [which made it 3-2] changed the whole momentum. Our emotion got going. We were like a machine. We were on a mission,” said Kix.
“Amie ignited us today. She put the team on her back. She always gives 100 percent and never gives up. She set the tone out there.”
Bedard set up the tying goal with a long free hit that wound up on Dubois’ stick.
“I wasn’t looking for her. I just hit it. Amie was on the left side at the top of the circle and she put it in the right corner,” said Bedard.
Bedard and Hilgar teamed up for a two-on-one off a Kim Leo pass that resulted in the game-winner.
“Tara made an amazing play,” said Kix. “She split two defenders, took it past the last defender and the goalie, and then made a beautiful pass to Rachael. This was one of those moments in sports you’ll never forget. Our will to win over the last 30 minutes was amazing.”
Jaye Lance made three saves on 10 shots for Maine while Christine Buckley had five saves on 14 shots for 12-8 New Hampshire.
USM women 1, Keene State 0
At Plymouth, N.H., freshman forward Rachael Nimon of Augusta scored her second straight game-winner, at the 24:29 mark of the first half, to propel the University of Southern Maine field hockey team into the Little East Conference championship game.
Jessie Superchi made one save on four shots for 14-6 USM of Gorham, which faces two-time defending conference champ Plymouth State, 16-1, in Saturday’s noon title game.
Brunswick’s Amy Carroll made five saves on seven shots for 14-8 Keene State (N.H.).
